"SAI ACCEPTS THE CHALLENGE" (contd...)

Gopichand is a famous man of letters in Telugu. His
father was too well known as an athiest and he
continued to walk in the foot prints 'of his father. In
1954, he was working as Director of Publicity in the
Government of Andhra at Kurnool His wife was
admitted to the Govt. Hospital for confinement and it
was found to be a case of hard labour. Three days
passed and there was no relief, Gopichand spent
restless days and sleepless nights. On the third day,
he chanced to pass by the side of the Sai Baba
Mandir constructed on the bank of Thungabhadra. In
his deep anguish and distressed state, he addressed
Sai, "people .say you are God, you possess vast
powers and that you come to the rescue of the
distressed If this is true, then come to my aid now
and see that my wife has a safe and painless delivery.
Then I will believe in your Omnipotence". So thinking
he wended his way to the hospital.

By the time he reached the hospital he found that his
wife had an easy and safe delivery. She gave birth to
a male child. A little later, when he met his wife in
the confinement room, she told him that an old man
with a beard and angarkha and a satka came and sat
on her bed and said "My dear child, don't worry, I
have come to give you relief. You will have a painless
delivery here and now". "So saying he applied Udi on

my forehead & made me dri&k water mixed with Udi.
No sooner did I drink the water than I delivered this
child. I have no pains now. I am now safe and alright."
Gopichand asked the time when the old man came
to her. She told him of the time. Gopichand was then
convinced that Sai appeared before his wife
immediately after he threw the challenge mentally
and was convinced of the Omnipotence of Lord Sai.
He mentally bowed and thanked Sai for the timely
succour given to his wife. The greatful father named
that child as Sai Baba. All those who knew him felt
the shock of this tremendous transformation.
Gopichand passed away a few years back, his son,
Sai Baba is now a grown up young man.

The spiritual history of India is replete with such
conversions and transformation. No body knows when
the grace of the Lord descends on man and effects
the transformation. Without His grace, no spiritual
progress can be achieved. It is because of overflowing
grace of Sainath that we have become His devotees.
Let us, therefore, strive hard to merit his grace and
progress further on the spiritual path till the goal of
self-realisation is reached.

Let me conclude with what Hemadpant says in his
"Sai Satcharita". "Baba's speech established its
efficacy or greatness while he was living in the flesh,
but wonder of wonders, it did the same even after his
passing. Baba said, "Believe me, though I pass
away, my bones in my tomb will give you hope and
confidence. Not only myself but my tomb would be
speaking, moving and communicating with those
who would surrender themselves wholeheartedly
to me. Do not be anxious that I would be absent

from you. You will hear my bones speaking and
discussing your welfare. But remember me always,
believe in me heart and soul and then you will be
most benefitted".

Satsang Thought for the day

What Is Maturity ????????????

What is maturity ? Maturity is the ability to control
anger and settle differences without violence or
destruction. Maturity is patience. It is the willingness
to pass up immediate pleasure in favor of the
long-term gain. Maturity is perseverance, the ability
to sweat out a project or a situation in spite of heavy
opposition and discouraging set-backs. Maturity is
the capacity to face unpleasantness and frustration,
discomfort and defeat, without complaint or collapse.

Maturity is humility. It is being big enough to say,
"I was wrong." And,when right, the mature person
need not experience the satisfaction of saying, "I
told you so." Maturity is the ability to make a
decision and stand by it. The immature spend their
lives exploring endless possibilities; then they do
nothing. Maturity means dependability, keeping
one's word, coming through in a crisis. The
immature are mastersof the alibi. They are the
confused and the disorganized. Their lives are a
maze of broken promises, former friends,
unfinished business, and good intentions that
somehow never materialize. Maturity is the art
of living in peace with that which we cannot change,
the courage to change that which should be
changed -- and the wisdom to know the
difference.

"SAI ACCEPTS THE CHALLENGE" by P. V. Satyanarayan Sastry B. A.

"SAI ACCEPTS THE CHALLENGE"

The devotees could never approach Baba unless he
meant to receive them If their turn did not come,
Baba did riot remember them. ('SRI SAI SATCHARITA')

Saint Purandaradas is a household name in South India.
He is the grand father of Karnatac Music, while Saint
Thyaga-raju is considered the father of that form of
music.

The original name of Purandaradas was Srinivas Nayakar.
!-'He-was a multi-millionaire carrying on business in gold
and diamonds. He was a confirmed miser. He spent his
life in business and never for a second, thought of God.
By the accumulation of merit of many previous births, his
turn for acceptance by the Lord came. Panduranga (Vithal)

of Pandharapur came to him, one day, as a Brahmin and
requested him for charity for performing the marriage of his
daughter. Srinivas asked him to come the next day. When
the Brahmin turned up the next day, Srinivas asked him to
come on the morrow. Thus the Brahmin was made to

come daily to Srinivas for six months. The Brahmin at last
approached the wife of Srinivas and told her of his plight.
The generous- wife presented the Brahmin with her
diamond nose-ring worth some thousands of rupees. The
Brahmin took the nosering to Srmivas and offered it for
sale. Srinivas immediately recognised it as his wife's
and striking the bargain asked the Brahmin to-come the
next day for the-money. He kept the nosering in- his
iron safe and locked it up and went home and asked
his wife for the-nose-ring. The wife, who knew the
temperament of her husband, went inside a room and

wanted to end her life by taking diamond poison.
Accordingly she prepared the poison and was on the
point of swallowing'it, when Loj something fell into the

cup making sound. when she put her hand into the cup
she found her own nose-ring. Tears of gratitude flowed
from her eyes profusely and she heartily thanked the
Lord for the timely succour. She took the nose-ring
and gave it to her husband. The husband was frightened.
He immediately ran to his shop, opened the iron safe and
found the nose-ring missing. He was all the more dumb
founded. He went home and asked his wife to tell the
truth. The wife narrated everything in detail. The mental
eye of Srinivas was opened. He now realised that the
Lord himself came in the form of the Brahmin to redeem

him. He recollected how he spent this precious human
life in fleeting pleasures of the flesh and money. He was
now a changed man by the grace of the Lord. He gave
away his enormous wealth in charity to the poor and
became a begger. He, with his wife, wandered from
place to place singing the glory of Lord Vithal living
on a begger's food. He brought the Lord numerous

homes and created spiritual atmosphere wherever he
went. He occupies a prominent place in the galaxy of
the devotees of Lord Panduranga (Vithal.)

Balasaheb Bhate spent his life even as a student in a
wild manner. He was a confirmed "Charvaka" (atheist)
having the motto "Eat, drink and make merry for,
tomorrow we may die" which happens to be the essence
of Charvaka Philosophy. He became, in course of time,
the Mamlatdar of Kopergoan and earned the reputation
of an honest and efficient officer. He was loved by the
English Collectors and Commissioners of the day. Several
friends of his, became devotees of Sainath. On their way
to Shirdi, they used to stay with Bhate for the night or for
a day. Bhate used to scoff at them for their devotion to
Sai. The friends used to remonstrate. "If you only go to
Sai, you will come to know what he is. Without seeing
Him, without knowing Him, why should you criticise Sai
and laugh at us". Bhate never took their remonstrances
seriously and indulged in reveling i>ai and His devotees
whenever an opportunity afforded. Things were going on

like this for some-time, turing the course of his official
tour of his Taluq, Bhate once happened to camp at
Shirdi. Out of curiosity, with no serious purpose, he
went to Dwaraka Mayi and sat before Sai. Sai, all of a

sudden, covered his head with cloth. Bhate was at
once transformed. All his vasanas and .samskaras
(uatencies) were completely eradicated. He became a
devotee of Baba and spent his life at the feet of Baba.
As one affected by religious melancholia, he was
prematurely retired and granted a pension by the then
ruling Britishers. It is this Bhate that argued with

Hemadpant of pre-destination as against free will.
Bhate performed the obsequies of Baba along with
Upasani Baba, after his Mahasamadhi. Every friend
and acquaintance of Bhate was surprised at the
transformation of this virtual Char-vaka into a great
and staunch devotee of Baba. This transformation
took place while Baba was in his mortal soil Baba

similarly effected transformation in the case of a
confirmed atheist some thirty six years after his
Mahasamadhi.

Satsang In The Vision of Sai

In The Vision of Sai
By Shyamala A.K. Bhombore
We were at Shirdi on the 20th October 1988, to

participate in the 'punya thithi' festival of Sai Maharaj.
We stayed on in the Samadhi Mandir to enjoy Sai-bliss
and take part in all the programmes going on. In the
early hours of 21st morning we had to leave Shirdi for
Bombay. At 3 a.m. we took leave of Sai Baba and left
for the bus stand to catch the bus to Manmad, to
catch the Panchavati Express for Bombay.

We had a dilemma as we started for the bus stand. We
had five packages to be carried and at those early hours
on the main road, we could not locate any porter too. I
did not know what to do except cry for Sai's help.

Sai-grace is open to all those who knock at his door. Soon
we could see a middle aged man dressed in white coming
towards us. We took him for a porter and sought his help
to carry our baggages. He bluntly refused to do so as he
is not a coolly but a flower vendor.

I virtually pleaded with him to help us out of this
predicament at least by locating a porter for us and
we moved towards the bus stand. Even before we had
moved a few yards, he had a change of heart and
asked us to hand him all the luggages. He carried
them on his head and shoulders and moved towards
the Bus Station. We were half way through and saw
a bus coming out of the stand. Our good friend
stopped the bus and asked us to get in saying that
it was bound for Manmad. He helped us keeping the
luggage inside the bus too. He refused to accept any
money for the benevolent services he rendered us.

He took leave of us with a smile and assured us that
our journey would be pleasant. Indeed it was Sai Baba
who gave his darshan to us and blessed us.

A story from Shri Sai Satcharitra -

A story from Shri Sai Satcharitra -
We should be content with what

God gave us

This is another story taken from the Shri Sai Satcharitra
which teaches us that we should be content with what
God gave us. Once Lord Shri Shirdi Saibaba made his
devotee to learn on his own, this fact. For knowing how
He did it and how the devotee learnt the lesson, let us
start the story.
Once Shri Dasuganu Maharaj, a devotee of Lord Shri

Saibaba, started to write a commentary on
Eeshavasyopanishad. This Eeshavasyopanishad,
according to Prof. Ranade, contains many details
about inner knowledge, beautiful description on Athma
(soul) and invaluable description on yogi (spiritual man).
Dasuganu wrote a commentary on it in marathi language
in Ovi Chandassu (a form of decorative grammar). But
he could not get the gist on it. He was not contented
with what he wrote. He consulted other well-read people
who knew shastras. But he could not get what he wanted.
When no one could give proper explanation to him on this

upanishad, he decided to consult Lord Shri Shirdi Sai
Baba. When he got chance, he came to Shirdi, met
Lord Shri Saibaba, prayed to his Holy feet, explained his
difficulty in understanding Eeshavasyopanishad and
pleaded Him to give proper explanation for it.
Lord Shri Saibaba blessed him and said, "don't be in a

hurry. There is no difficulty in this matter. The maid-girl at
Kakasaheb Dixit's house in Viliparle will clarify your doubt
on your return journey.". Everyone around there thought
that Lord Shri Saibaba is joking. They said how can a
complete illeterate maid-girl explain this thing.
Having full faith on Lord Shri Saibaba, Dasuganu left Shirdi

for Kakasaheb Dixit's house at Viliparle. The next day
morning as soon as he woke up from his sleep he heard
a song being sung by a poor little girl. The song is all
about describing a red saree. He liked the song and so
he came out and listened to the song. That little girl is
the sister of Kakasaheb Dixit's servant, Namya. She
is a small girl. She wore torn out clothes and was
cleaning all the dishes. Seeing her poverty and her
happiness, Dasuganu felt pity on her. The next day
while Rao Bahadur M.V. Pradhan was giving Dhoti
and other clothes to Dasuganu, he recommended Rao
Bahadur to give a small saree to that girl. Rao Bahadur
bought a nice small saree and gifted it to her. Akin to a
hungry man getting delicious food, the little girl's
happiness knew no bounds. The next day she wore
the new saree. Happily she danced and played with
other children. She played and danced better than any
other child there. The next day she kept the saree in
her suitcase and came with her usual torn out clothes
with same happiness on her face as it was there when
she wore the new saree. Before the girl was poor, so
she wore torn out clothes. Now she got new clothes,
but she stored them in her suitcase. Even then without
any things like sadness or discontent on her face, she
played and danced heartfully. So, by this, Dasuganu
realised that the feelings of happiness and sadness
depend upon the behaviour of our heart and its thoughts.
He thought very deeply about this thing. We should be
contented with what God gave us. God will give us
whatever we want, by protecting us from all sides. So,
he realised that what all God gave us is for our good.
In this particular thing, the little girl, her poverty, her
torn out clothes, the new saree, the one who granted
it, the one who took it, the feeling of granting are all
just various forms of God. God is present among all
these things. Here Dasuganu learnt the moral of the
upanishad; that we should be happy with what we
have, whatever we get is by the order of Him and it
is for the good-being of us.
Om Jai Sai Ram

This story is taken from Shri Saibaba Jeevitacharitam
originally written in marathi by one of Baba's devotee
Hemadpant and translated into telugu by Pratti
Narayana Rao.

Sai Baba Everywhere

"To separate the true from the false in everything,

- St. Thiruvalluvar

Once in the local bazar, I found attractive calendars
of Sai Baba with a caption 'APKA RAKSHAK'. I
purchased 10 copies for distribution of which I
retained one for keeping in the pooja room.

Somehow Sai Baba prompted me to get this
photograph framed. I was in a dilemma as it was
a large one and would pinch my purse considerably.
One day I took it to a photo-frame shop near our
home and I was told that it would cost an amount
ranging from Rs. 50/- to Rs 60/- depending upon
the frame, glass etc., I chose a particular frame
and settled for Rs. 45/-.

Two or three days later I went to the frame shop to
collect the photograph. The owner had gone out
and his brother was in the shop doing some woodcraft.
During our conversation, I offered him to give a few

pieces of a wooden Almirah lying useless in our
house. He was delighted at this unsolicited offer
and immediately we went to our house to see this.
He agreed to take it and instead of money, I
suggested to him to give me a rebate on the frame
as barter. He said that he would accept whatever I
give him. He was quite happy when I offered him
a tender.

When he had come to our house, I told him about
my Tape recorder. It was giving me frequent trouble
and had deprived me of listening to Sai bhajans. I
had an idea to dispose this set and buy a new one.
This friend told me that he would arrange for this
also as he knows a shop-keeper who buys second
hand tape-recorders. Accordingly he sent a man
the very next day. I could strike a deal at a
reasonable price and in the same evening, brought
home a brand new tape recorder.

We strongly believe in Sai Baba's hand in every
moment of our life. With deep faith and wholehearted
devotion one can achieve abundant blessings of
Sai Maharaj - 'I am there where there is devotion.'

Love and Grace Of Sai Baba, that's all we need

Sai Baba our Sadaguru is always showering his
love and grace on us. Sai Baba is always eager
to help his devotees and erase their problems. We
the devotees always run with our problems to Sai
Baba, we visit the Holy Land Shirdi, in the hope of
getting free from our conflicts and problems. Some
of us looks out for mantras and attend aarti, sing
song of Sai Baba. And why not it is this great
characteristic of Sai Baba of Shirdi, that he runs
for his devotees welfare and is always anxious to
solve their problems.
After giving us so much and making us free from
our anxieties, Sai Baba asks us for faith and
devotion, which is much needed for the us to get
closer to his infinite self and merge into it and get
the ultimate freedom. How many of us can do this,
even after getting so much love and care from our
Sadaguru.

Should not our ultimate goal should be listen to
him and look only for his love and grace, after
demanding so many things from him and getting
all the help.Truly all we need is Sai Baba's love
and grace, and nothing more than that. Nothing
can be better than that. This reminds me of a
Sufi story, which i will narrate as I remember.

There was a Sufi dervish, who used to live with
a group of followers. The Sufi Master had much
love for God and wanted nothing more than the
love and grace of God. Once it happened that
the while moving about, the group got lost in the
forest. They had to pass through much discomfort
and hardships. Even food and water was not
available for the whole day while they were
roaming about to find a way out of the forest.
After the exhausting day physically and mentally,
finally they manage to reach a village in the
evening. The villagers of the village they reached
were rather fanatic in nature, who hated Sufi
culture. So the Sufi Master and the his followers,
who had reached there after facing much
difficulties, were drove out of the village with
harsh words spoken to them and even stone
thrown at them. After all this, the Sufi Master
sat for his regular prayers. The prayer that ways
always in his heart and always flowed through
his mouth. He would pray Oh God thank you for
everything you have given me, I thank you

immensely for all the love and grace you shower
on me always. Listening to this one of the
disciple could not hold himself. He told his
master that it was too much to say that for,
after what they had gone through that day. He
told his Master that at least for that day,
the Master should have complained to the God.
If not complained it was too much to thank him.
To this the Master asked him to keep quiet,
he told, " None knows better than my God what
is best for me. Indeed this was needed, otherwise
why would he give it to me. The Almighty knows
best what is good and needed for me, otherwise
there is no reason this should have happened to
me. I know his Love and Grace is with me and
that is all that I need. Nothing more is required."
How many of us can pray only for Sai Baba's
Love and Grace. How many of us have such
Faith in Sai Baba.

This also reminds of a similar Zen Story titled Is
That So A beautiful girl in the village was pregnant.
Her angry parents demanded to know who was
the father. At first resistant to confess, the anxious
and embarrassed girl finally pointed to Hakuin, the
Zen master whom everyone previously revered for
living such a pure life. When the outraged parents
confronted Hakuin with their daughter's accusation,
he simply replied "Is that so?"
When the child was born, the parents brought it to
the Hakuin, who now was viewed as a pariah by
the whole village. They demanded that he take
care of the child since it was his responsibility.
"Is that so?" Hakuin said calmly as he accepted
the child.

For many months he took very good care of the
child until the daughter could no longer withstand
the lie she had told. She confessed that the real
father was a young man in the village whom she
had tried to protect. The parents immediately
went to Hakuin to see if he would return the baby.
With profuse apologies they explained what had
happened. "Is that so?" Hakuin said as he
handed them the child.

SAI BABA'S MISSION

SAI BABA'S MISSION
by Sri Narasimha Swamiji
The SECRET OF GOD-REALISATION
The Lord's blessings are ever with His devotees

whoever chants His sweet names and who work
in the world as His instruments, enthrone Him in
your heart merge yourself in Him. Continuous
remembrance of the Lord is the secret of success
in life and God realization.
- SWAMI SIVANANDA.

Term ‘Mission’ is derived from the Latin root ‘Mitto’
meaning ‘send.’ So a missionary is one who is
sent with a message or direction, ordinarily by
God, and, as used in Christian literature, a mission

was the most valuable characteristic of the lives of
such great Prophets as Moses, Jesus, etc.
Jesus’ mission was, by his own death, i.e.,

sacrificing himself on the cross, to absolve mankind
from hereditary or original sin, that is, the sin derived
by being the descendants of the first sinners and
rebels - Adam and Eve.

His death was considered a sacrifice on behalf of
entire humanity. Others' mission, for example,
Moses, was to lead the Jews from captivity in
Egypt on towards the Promised Land and also to
make Laws that the Jews should submit to and
so he proclaimed Laws of the 12 tables. The idea
of a missionary is practically that of an agent. In
the case of Sai Baba, he declared "God has
agents everywhere. They have great powers".
Baba added, ‘I also have great powers’ implying

thereby that he also was an agent of God. He
also expressly told D.S. Rasane ‘I can do
nothing except what God orders.’ He did not
give a kupni to G.G. Narke saying, ‘The Fakir’
(God) has not permitted me to give you kupni,

i.e., the robe of the sanyasi or begging fakir -
as G. G. Narke was to be a family man, an
earning Grihastha, according to God's plan - and
not a beggar. As an agent he said that he had
vast powers, that is, divine powers.

The powers and the mission have a close relation.
The mission has to be worked through the powers
given and the powers are given only for carrying
out the mission. Baba had by concentration on

God practically every siddhi that one can think
of, and Srimad Bhagavatha XI (15) 32 says "What
power is there that cannot be got by concentration
on God with conquest or control of mind and
senses and breath?"

So his possession of vast powers (both
acknowledged and proved), was always utilized for
the benefit of mankind, promoting individual benefits
that were obvious, seen and well understood, and
general benefits which were not so equally obvious
or well seen and understood. In Sai Baba's life we
see one marked difference between his life before
1886 and the life thereafter. Before 1886, the main
stress of his activities and views appears to be on
doing good to those who were near him and

connected by rinanubandha (prenatal obligations).
But rinanubandha cannot stop within definite
geographical limits.
By reason of that principle, people from a far had

to benefit, and in working it out, he achieved other
things also than doing good to the immediate
comers. The benefits derived by others consist in
(1) the development and spread of the Sai faith
intensively and extensively i.e. all over the country
(thus arresting the spread of Atheism and Agnostic
ism) and (2) the unification thereby of dharma and
religion regardless of existing diversification and
divisions of religion, caste, creed etc.
