Satsang MY PRAYER

MY PRAYER
By S. Natarajan

When life grinds to a halt
I pray only for Sai's darshan
To absolve me of my sins any sort
And lead to Jiva and Paramathma fusion
I pray for Sai's radiant light
To burn out my past bonds
And be with me in future births
Till I qualify for eternal peace
I want to rest at His holy feet
And be ever in bliss and ananda
This bliss I would never forfeit
By the accumulated sins of Samsara bandham
I know Baba is an ocean of mercy
And a Bhakta praadheena of his devotee
Sure, Sai follows him in every birth
Till the devotee merges in Sai's eternity
Baba followed Chandorkar for four generations
For 72 generations Sai was with Shama
Durandar brothers had Sai's grace for 60 generations
Even a Jnani has to suffer many births
Before realizing and attaining the Almighty.

Satsang Road to Sai Baba

Road to Sai Baba
By U. Sangamesan

"I took a piece of plastic clay
And idly fashioned it one day,
And as my fingers pressed it still,
It moved and yielded to my will.
I came again when days were passed;
The bit of clay was hard at last,
The form I gave it still it bore,
But I could change that form no more.
I took a piece of living clay
And touched it gently day by day.
And molded with my power and art
A young child's soft and yielding heart
I came again when years were gone;
It was a mind I looked upon;
That early impress still he wore,
And I could change that form no more."

It was October 1943.I was in my early twenties and was
passing through a turmoil in life. I had problems from all sides -
physical, domestic, official etc., I had lost my peace of mind. I
had resorted to traditional forms of worship and nothing
concrete had come out of it. At times I felt like running away
from life and even on a few occasions thoughts of committing
suicide had entered my mind. It was at this juncture, I was
drawn towards Sai Baba through Sri Narasimha Swamiji.
One evening I went to Mylapore and sat on the steps of the

tank adjoining Kapaleeswarar's temple. I sat quiet for a long
time and my mind was debating as to whether I should run
away from my family or ends my life. The time was already
8 '0' clock and as I got up. I saw a board 'All India Sai Samaj'
just opposite the tank.

I had heard of Sai Baba but did not know the existence of a
Samaj. I approached the building. It was Dr. Nanjunda Rao's
residence. I went upto the gate. I saw there a saintly person
with a half grey beard talking to another person. I saw the
picture of Sai Baba in a wooden enclosure. I stood there for
a while.

On seeing me the person who was talking to the saintly
person came out and introduced himself as 'K. Radhakrishna'
and asked me to come in. He pointed out to the saintly
personality as Sri Narasimha Swamiji, President of All India
Sai Samaj. I had heard his name as the one who spearheaded
Sai prachar and was immensely happy to meet him. I
prostrated before Sri Narasimha Swamiji. He blessed me with
the words: "May Sri Sai Baba protect you and your family".
The very blessings of Swamiji were a turning point in my life.
I narrated my tale of woes to him. Swamiji asked me to

worship Sai Baba with total surrender and promised me that
He would take care of everything. As foretold by Swamiji, I
came out of my problems shortly thereafter and peace of
mind dawned on me. I became a regular visitor to All India
Sai Swamiji and also a 'Sai Sevak' in Sai Prachar of Sri
Narasimha Swamiji.

Sri K. Radhakrishna who later on blossomed himself to a
great saint Sri Saipadananda Radhakrishna Swamiji
affectionately recalled the above incident whenever I met
him at Bangalore and once wrote on the flyleaf of my
copy of Sai Satcharitra as follows:
"Got any rivers you think are uncross able?
Got any mountains you can't tunnel through?
Sai Baba specializes in things thought impossible.''

Once we grasp this great truth, the exhilaration and
adventure that Sai Baba brings into our lives makes
anything else seem pale stuff. For everyone's problem,
I always quote : "Take heart - these are the very
adventures in which Sai Baba delights.

Satsang BABA SEEKS HIS CHILDREN

BABA SEEKS HIS CHILDREN

The hope, solace and consolation for the spirituality anguished
human being is that, though it may be very difficult, if not,
altogether impossible for man to search God by his own unaided
efforts, it is no problem for God to reach man. SRI SAI BABA
pointing to His devotees assembled before Him, used to say
"These people imagine that they have come to me of their own
accord, without realizing that, it is I who have drawn them to me,
like pulling the birds by a string tied to their feet. I have been
watching, nursing and guiding them like a fond mother through
several births". What a consolation to reflect that the benevolent
and protective hands of Baba are over us, even when we do not
realize that our heart-strings are held in His hands, fill your heart
with the oil of His love, and trim the wick of your mind and work,
wait and watch day and night for none knows when the Bridegroom
comes. There are no errors or omissions in SRI SAI BABA's ways.
He surely comes, but not when you want but in due season when
the time is ripe and you are really ready to receive Him.

- Sri RADHAKRISHNA SWAMIJI

Gayathri Mantra

OM
BHUR BHUVA SVAHA
TAT SAVITUR VARENYAM
BHARGO DEVASYA DHEEMAHI
DHI YO YONAH PRACHODAYAT

The Gayatri Mantra can be translated as

OM

Para Brahman

BHUR

Bhu Loka (Physical Plane) - This refers to the five elements this
body is made up of

BHUVA

Bhuva Loka (Middle Plane) - This refers to the power in man which
animates the body. This is actually the Prana Sakthi

SVAHA

Swarga Loka (Heaven)

TAT

That, this refers to God, or Paramatma.

SAVITUR

That from which all is born

VARENYAM

Fit to be worshipped

BHARGO

The Radiance, the Spiritual Effulgence, the light that bestows
wisdom.

DEVASYA

Divine Reality

DHEEMAHI

We Meditate

DHI YO

Buddhi, Intellect

YO

Which

NAH

Our

PRACHODAYAT

Enlighten.

Sage Vishwamitra discovered the Gayatri Mantra. This mantra

enabled the sage to use rare weapons, which bowed to his will,
when this mantra was invoked with faith. Through the power he
attained, this way he was able to create a counterpart of the
cosmos. The Gayatri Mantra is addressed to the energy of the
Sun - Surya. It is addressed to the Immanent and Transcendent
Divinity. This mantra has infinite potentiality; it is a vibrant formula.
It has immense powers, which are truly amazing, for the Sun is
it's presiding Deity.

The Gayatri Mantra is enshrined in the Vedas, the most ancient
Scriptures of Man. Gayatri is the Mother of the Vedas and Gayatri
redeems the chanter of the Mantra. Ma Gayatri is present wherever
the Mantra is chanted. Gayatri has three names - Gayatri, Saavitri
and Saraswathi. These three are present in each one of us. Gayatri
is the master of the senses, Saavitri is the master of Prana (Life
Force). Saavitri signifies Truth. Saraswathi is the Presiding Deity of
Speech (Vaak). Theses three represent purity of Thought, Word
and Deed. One who practises the purity and harmony of Thought,
Word and Deed will have Gayatri, Saavitri and Saraswathi in him.
The Gayatri Mantra Has Three Parts

1. "OM BHUR BHUVA SVAHA TAT SAVITUR
VARENYAM BHARGO DEVASYA"

2. "DHEEMAHI"

3. "DHIYO YO NAH PRACHODAYAT"

These three parts refer to the three elements that figure in the
adoration of the Lord - Praise, Meditation and Prayer.
These Parts may be described as

· Prayer to Savitha, The Divine is first praised
· Meditation on Savitha, The Divine is then meditated upon with

reverence
· Prayer to Savitha.

An appeal is made to the Divine to awaken and strengthen our
intellect, the discriminating faculty in us. The Gayatri Mantra is
considered to be the Essence of the teachings of the Vedas,
The Veda Sara. Chanting it fosters and sharpens the knowledge
yielding faculty in man, and one who chants it regularly with
faith the mantra relieves him of diseases, wards off all misery
and fulfils all the needs of man. It bestows all that is beneficial
to the chanter. The Gayatri should not be chanted casually, as
it give the chanter various kinds of power. This mantra should be
chanted three times a day - Dawn, Noon and Dusk, although the
mantra is not bound by these three time periods of the day.
Remember it can be chanted anywhere and at any time. The
chanter of Gayatri mantra should not treat it casually and his
heart should be pure at all times. The Gayatri Mantra is an
essential requisite for the young and students because it ensures
bright and auspicious future for them. The chanter of mantra has
sharper intellect, they become more zealous, more enthusiastic,
and certainly become qualified to get better marks, ranks and first
classes. Just as we take bath to cleanse our bodies, so also we
should chant the Gayatri Mantra to purify our mind and Intellect.
The most recommended time for chanting the Gayatri are :

· When we get up from bed in the morning

· Before every meal

· When we go to bed in the evening

After the Gayatri one should chant 'OM' and 'Shanti' Three times.
The Gayatri Mantra protects the chanter wherever he may be.
The importance of the mantra are given as follows:

· If Gayatri Mantra is not recited correctly it has opposite effect
of enveloping the chanter in darkness. If it is chanted with Love,
God will accept it.

· Each word should be pronounced clearly and distinctly, without
undue haste or hurry.

· Gayatri is the very basis of Vedas. It is also called Veda Mata
(Mother of the Vedas)

· Gayatri is the mantra, which preserves, protects and rescues
the chanter from mortality.

· The Gayatri mantra is a Universal prayer, which asks for a clear
Intellect so that the Truth may be reflected therein without
distortion.

· Men, Women of all climes and creed, can chant Gayatri Mantra.

· The heart needs to be cleansed atleast three times a day with
Gayatri.

· The Gayatri Mantra is synonymous to the Divinity and therefore
must be approached with humility, reverence, faith and love
towards the Mantra.

· Chanting with humility, reverence, faith and love is more important
than mechanical repetition while the mind wanders.

· Full faith in the power and potency of the Gayatri Mantra will be
generated only when the seeker has developed requisite degree
of enthusiasm, reverence and love towards the Mantra.

· The more one chants the Mantra, the greater benefit the chanter
gets.

Satsang Glory of the Guru

A Guru transmits his power to a worthy disciple through thought,
sight or touch. Transmission through thought is like the hatching
of eggs by mother tortoise, which buries its eggs in the sands
and goes away but its continuous thought waves have the power
and warmth to hatch the eggs. Transmission through sight is like
the intense gaze of the Guru into the eyes of the disciple, like the
fish which lays its eggs in an insoluble bubble just outside its
mouth and looks at the eggs all the time and the third type of
transmission is through the touch of the Guru - placing of Guru's
palm on the disciple's head.

Enlightening by thought like the mother tortoise hatching her
eggs was the method used by Sai Baba. Enlightenment by
drishti, like the fish hatching her eggs through sight was the
method used by Ramana Bhagawan and transmission through
touch like the bird hatching its eggs by sitting on it was the
method of Ramakrishna.

Since God's grace is ex-gratia and can never be procured by
human effort all that an earnest striver can do is to "seek,
knock and ask". When the seeker's hunger and thirst for God
equals the cry for air by a man drowning in water or the
desperate need for water by fishes thrown out of water then the
Grace of God is not far away. God's love for man has been
described as follows:
"When my devotee prays to me lying down, I sit near and listen.

When he sits and prays, I stand by and listen. When he stands
and prays, I dance before him, and when he dances in ecstatic
prayer to me, I prostrate before him."

Narada saw Lord Krishna opening a small pooja box and taking
out reverentially something from a beautiful silk pouch and when
he saw it was just a bit of earth, he asked of the Lord what it was.
The Lord replied it was the dust collected from the feet of the
devotees. So there is no higher sadhana than total unconditional
surrender. Man by himself is nothing but a frail being like a dry
leaf caught in a storm and tossed about helplessly till the power
of God flows into him and he becomes the image of God as God
had originally made him. Complete and unflinching faith in the

Guru will take the disciple to the goal even as Ekalavya attained
perfection in Dhanur Vidya by worshipping with faith only the
clay image of Drona as Guru.

Satsang Glory of the Guru

Glory of the Guru

Lord, Guru and Self are logical sequences in the Spiritual
Journey to liberation. When the divine spark starts glowing
inside an ardent spiritual aspirant and all the values of
worldly nature fail to quench his thirst for reality and the
hunger for God becomes powerful, insistent and continuous,
then God Himself takes the form of a Guru suitable to the

understanding of the sadhaka.

Spiritual goal is something that can rarely be attained by one's
own effort without guidance from a realized Guru When one
cannot cross a forest or climb a mountain peak without a guide
how difficult it should be a journey alone on the intangible
spiritual path? People, who out of egoism, pride and ignorance
question the need of competence of the Guru are yet too raw
and have not reached the ripe stage of a true disciple. Even
exalted avatars and mahapurushas, who by their own right were
born with Brahma Jnana went through the formalities of
Guru-Sishya relationship be Rama wfth Vasistha, Krishna with
Sandeepani. Narada with Kumara, Sukha with Janaka, Jesus
with John and Adi Shankaracharya with Govindapada.

The Guru not only shows the way, but has the power to transmit
the truth of his experience. In fact, it is the Guru who makes the
spiritual ideal living by initiating the disciple with a simultaneous
impulsion into the practice for the progressive unfoldment of
spiritual realisation. Sri Narasimha Swamiji says, "After my
enlightenment, I discovered that I had committed three blunders.
Firstly, long before I started my whole-hearted journey towards
God, God had already started earlier His journey towards me.
Secondly, when my love towards him was just a drop, a tricle,

His love for me was like the sea in high tide. And third and
lastly, when I thought I had reached Him, actually it was not I
that had reached Him but that He had reached me. When God
decides to absorb a man unto Himself (why and when, we
cannot say), he first appears as a Guru to create longing, a
yearning and a love for God in the heart of the person concerned
and because He creates the 'prerana' or love in the heart of the
person this Guru is called 'Preraka'. After this, another Guru
comes and wipes off all defilements and negative propensities
from the heart of that chosen person and purifies him. The
second Guru is called 'Swechaka1 (Swacha means pure or

clean). Just after that another Guru comes up to explain the
glories of the Lord and this Guru is called Vachaka1 viz., by
words he expounds the glory of God. Yet another Guru the
'Bodhaka', the fourth comes up to give the necessary buddhi
or wisdom to understand what the Vachaka Guru is expounding
and the last and final Guru called 'Darshaka' comes to the
devotee to help him to have darshan of God in all His manifested
Glory.

Satsang Thought for the day

A holy man was having a conversation with the Lord one day and said,
"Lord, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like. "The Lord led
the holy man to two doors. He opened one of the doors and the holy
man looked in. In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the
middle of the table was a large pot of stew which smelled delicious and
made the holy man's mouth water. The people sitting around the table
were thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished.
They were holding spoons with very long handles that were strapped to
their arms and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew and
take a spoonful, but because the handle was longer than their arms,
they could not get the spoons back into their mouths. The holy man
shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering.
The Lord said, "You have seen Hell." They went to the next room and
opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one. There was
the large round table with the large pot of stew which made the holy
man's mouth water. The people were equipped with the same
long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and
plump, laughing and talking.
The holy man said,"I don't understand."
It is simple" said the Lord, "it requires but one skill. You see, they have
learned to feed each other. While the greedy think only of themselves.
The greedy are always left unsatisfied with no matter how much they
have achieved in life. When we are kind and compassionate towards
others who are unable to help themselves and offer a helping hand,
God chooses to show his grace and shower his kindness on us.

Satsang A BRIEF LIFE SKETCH OF GURUDEV H. H. NARASIMHA SWAMIJI

On 12th September, 1956, Swamiji's 83rd birthday, was celebrated at
the head quarters and- at upasamaja's as in the previous years. From
8lh October, 1956, Swamiji could not move out of his bed on account
of fever. He directed from his bed pracharak work, dictated editorial to
the Sai Sudha, attended to other works and spent the rest of his time
in meditating on'Baba.
Gradually his limbs benumbed. On 19lh October, 1956, Swamiji left his
mortal coil, leaving us the legacy of Sai-movement and All India Sai
Samaj, Madras. Baba's grace and H. H. Narasimha Swamiji's dynamism
drew numerous devotees. One of the greatest devotees of Sai Baba, Sri
Dasganu Maharaj once said, "A jeweller, like Sri Narasimha Swamiji
knows the value of a gem and will not rest till he brings the brilliance
of the crystal to the peoples' notice."

Swamiji's picture was unveiled on 26th January, 1966 by Justice M.
B. Rege in the Samadhi Mandir at Shirdi and was presented to Shirdi
Sansthan and this portrait is kept along with those of other devotees.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I was able to write this brief biography of Gurudev Sri H.H. Narasimha
Swamiji by doing a thorough study of the available literature in English

and Tamil about Baba and Narasimha Swamiji. The references done
by me are from the publications of All India Sai Samaj. I am highly
thankful to All India Sai Samaj, Mylapore, Madras for their valuable
publications and also to the authors of the following books for the
spiritual guidance given to me through their books

1. Sri Narasimha Swamiji, Apostle of Sri Sai Baba of Shirdi by Swami
Sai Padananda.
2. Search, Discovery and Mission, Life sketch of H.H. Narasimha

Swamiji by P.S. Varadaraj Iyer.
3. Life of Sai Baba, Volume I to IV by Sri H.H. Narasimha Swamiji.
4. Sai Sudha and convention souvenirs arc my other sources.

I owe my humble pranams and indebtedness to Sri Sai Padananda
Radhakrishna Swamiji, former President, All India Sai Samaj, who was
responsible for the construction of Sri H.H. Narasimha Swamiji's cottage
in the All India Sai Samaj premises, as a tribute and homage to Swamiji
during his birth centenary year. I pray Sri Sai Baba, the Benevolent
Master and Sri Narasimha Swamiji to shower on all of us their choicest
blessings.

Satsang A BRIEF LIFE SKETCH OF GURUDEV H. H. NARASIMHA SWAMIJI

Papaiya Chetty of Bangalore, one of the readers of Swamiji's books
on Shri Sai Baba, met Swamiji at Shri Sai Baba's temple at Shirdi
in 1940. He handed over a bundle, containing Rs. 11,458 to Swamiji
for his work and left without saying anything. He asked the trustees
of Shirdi Sanslhan to utilize the amount for Sai-prachar. As they
declined to accept it, Swamiji got Baba's will through a child (who
picked one slip out of the three, written by Swamiji). According to
it, he utilised that money for Sai-pracharak work.

In 1949, the Samaj was shifted from Broodies Road to the plot of
land (10 grounds), bought in Alarmelu Mangapuram, Mylapore. By
donations from generous devotees, through the appeal in Sai Sudha
and sale of Sai literature, funds were raised to complete the front
hall. Here Baba's picture was installed and Swamiji started the
worship on Gurupoornima day on 7lh July, 1952. By 1953,
construction of the Mandir with a tower, on the model of Shirdi,
was completed.

The Mahakumbhabhishckam of the Mandir was fixed on the 18th
October, 1953. Earlier to the Mahakumbhabhishckam Swamiji slipped
in the bathroom. This brought on a serious breakage of the thigh bone
and sixty days confinement in the hospital, followed by a subsequent
serious attack of dysentery. No energy was left to him to move about.
This continued nearly upto the middle of 1954. It was clear, that his
remaining energy and remaining life were intended to be devoted to
Baba. Swamiji concentrated on completing his work 'Life of Sai Baba',
recalling all within his memory. Baba provided his ankita child with a
stenographer. Without the help of a stenographer, it would have been
impossible to turn out any work by Swamiji either for the book or for
the 'Sai Sudha' or for the numerous pamphlets. Baba designated a
doctor in good position with excellent knowledge and made him

repeatedly attend upon Swamiji.

The royal present of Rs. 5,000/ - (Rupees five thousand only) by His
Highness, the Maharaja of Mysore enabled the Samaj to purchase

a press, printing machines and blocks. It is the physical frame of
Swamiji and spirit of Baba, that has blessed us with four volumes
of the life of Sri Sai Baba. It is to be noted, that no copyright is
reserved in any of the books or publications brought out by Swamiji.

Bow to Sri Sai Peace be to all
