Sri Sai Amrit Vani and Prayan of Sai Satcharitra *

Sri Sai Amrit Vani and Prayan of Sai Satcharitra

11th Oct 2007
Jai Sai Ram
First of all I would thank the devotees for sending the requests for prayers and inclusion of their names for the recitation of Sri Sai Amrit Vani directly to the id veena_gupta_ 2000@yahoo. com rather than disturbing all the members. Please post the letters to the group only such letters, which are meant for all the devotees. Also please avoid multiple letters.

Due to the approaching Eid Baba blessed with Udi in the shape of `Chand Sitare' ie Moon and star were also formed with Udi along with the words `Ram' `Sham' and OM, on the main photo in the mandir this Thursday.

Following devotees participated in absencia in the recitation of Sri Sai Amrit Vani, Pooja, prayers to Baba ( Shirdi) and Prayan of Sri Sai Satcharitra* by reciting Sri Sai Amrit Vani at their places on 11th Oct 2007 (The list is sorted as per their email ids, to avoid duplications) . However Mrs. Gupta prayed for all the devotees. In this list only those devotees are included, who themselves recited or read Sri Sai Amrit Vani at their places.

This Thursday the 11th Sept 2007. we enjoyed the following Leelas of Baba (of Shirdi). It may seems to be repitative for the old members, but when the Leelas are repetitive and so the discription is also repitative. Every week many new members join the group, so I have to repeat the whole events that happen on this day.

1. This time Udi started oozing from from Monday from the two photos on the wall and Hindi words `RAM' `SHAM' and `OM', and figure of Trishool were formed with Udi on one photo. Udi also started oozing from the photo and statue in the mandir from Tuesday and also forming the words `RAM' , `SHAM' and `OM'.

2. There was lot of Water from the Charans this Thursday also. Thali was emptied several times. The taste of water was similar to gulab jal and kewara mix. After distribution of Prasad, this water was also given to the devotees and again the Thali was filled with water.

3. Lap of Mrs. Gupta was filled with lots of Udi during the prayers.

4. Several devotees had Udi in the books of Sri Sai Amrit Vani and on themselves during the pooja.

5. On Thursday as soon as Bhog was offered, it was duly accepted by Baba. We noticed that the Bhog , which was placed before HIM was partially eaten. Part of Bhog was on the lips of photo and statue of Baba. Different items were there on lips in different photos. Parts of the remains in the box were given to the devotees who offered that item of bhog to Baba.

6. The feeling of Presence of Baba was very strong during the recitation of Sai Amrit Vani, Pooja and Prayer. Many devotees heard the voice of `Gungroos', as if Baba is dancing wearing gungroos.

7. All the boxes of Bhog, which were kept on the table were blessed with Udi.

8. Udi was there on the Many Photos, Statues and other documents placed before Baba on the table as soon as they were placed.

Navratri

Navratri

Navratri, the festival of nights, lasts for 9 days with three days each devoted to worship of Ma Durga, the Goddess of Valor, Ma Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth and Ma Saraswati, the Goddess of Knowledge. During the nine days of Navratri, feasting and fasting take precedence over all normal daily activities amongst the Hindus. Evenings give rise to the religious dances in order to worhip Goddess Durga Maa.

1st - 3rd day of Navratri
On the first day of the Navaratras, a small bed of mud is prepared in the puja room of the house and barley seeds are sown on it. On the tenth day, the shoots are about 3 - 5 inches in length. After the puja, these seedlings are pulled out and given to devotees as a blessing from god. These initial days are dedicated to Durga Maa, the Goddess of power and energy. Her various manifestations, Kumari, Parvati and Kali are all worshipped during these days. They represent the three different classes of womanhood that include the child, the young girl and the mature woman.

4th - 6th day of Navratri
During these days, Lakshmi Maa, the Goddess of peace and prosperity is worshipped. On the fifth day which is known as Lalita Panchami, it is traditional, to gather and display all literature available in the house, light a lamp or 'diya' to invoke Saraswati Maa, the Goddess of knowledge and art.

7th - 8th day of Navratri
These final days belong to Saraswati Maa who is worshipped to acquire the spiritual knowledge. This in turn will free us from all earthly bondage. But on the 8th day of this colourful festival, yagna (holy fire) is performed. Ghee (clarified butter), kheer (rice pudding) and sesame seeds form the holy offering to Goddess Durga Maa.

Mahanavami
The festival of Navratri culminates in Mahanavami. On this day Kanya Puja is performed. Nine young girls representing the nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshiped. Their feet are washed as a mark of respect for the Goddess and then they are offered new clothes as gifts by the worshiper. This ritual is performed in most parts of the country.

Satsang Miana Tai Ganesh Kuvelkar

Satsang Miana Tai Ganesh Kuvelkar

Miana Tai Ganesh Kuvelkar [Chandorkars daughter]

She was the daughter of Nana Saheb and Radhabai Chandorkar, born in 1887. She first visited Shirdi in 1900 when she was 13 yrs old along with her family. They visited Shirdi numerous times and Maina Tai was able to witness many a Leela, and hear the advice given to her father. She learnt early in life the consequences of disobeying Baba’s orders at the time of departure. Once she and her family were going to Nasik to attend a marriage. Baba didn’t give them permission to go, they left non-the-less. The result was they were hungry, for three or four hours. On the other hand obeying Baba’s orders, no matter how exasperating it may sound, was sure to give a comfortable, successful and safe journey [DE197]

She was married at a very young age, and moved to Pune with her husband. But he died in the plague epidemic of 1904. She realized that she was pregnant, so her mother took her to Jamner. At the tine of delivery she had a great deal of difficulty and the ‘The Jamner Miracle’ took place. [Sai Satcharita # 33] When the compassionate Baba sent Udi and Adkars Aarati through Ramghir Bua, on the way Baba appeared as a peon, who took Ramgir by tonga to Jamner and disappeared. In Nana’s home, they were performing ‘Navchandi Havan’ and recitation of “Saptashati Path” to overcome the difficult labor. It was only when Baba’s Udi as thirtha touched Maina Tais lips that the pain subsided. She had a safe delivery. The child however died, and this made Maina Tai very dejected. Das Ganu on hearing of the tragic circumstance, gave a pair of Baba’s silver paduka’s and her father who was very orthodox, comforted her. She found solace therein. She lived with her in- laws in a large joint family and had a peaceful life. She died in 1945 in Pune.

Satsang SAROJINI MULEY

Satsang SAROJINI MULEY

SAROJINI MULEY [Kaka Saheb MAHAJINIS DAUGHTER]

Both her parents were devoted to Baba. Hence she was inculcated into the Bhakti Marg very early in life. Sarojini was born on May 2nd 1910 at Bandra. She was the daughter of Lakshman Ganesh Mahajini, whom Baba called ?Kaka.' Mention is made of in various places in the Sai Satcharita #12, 35] Sarojini first visited Shirdi in 1918 along with her father. Baba upon seeing her beckoned her to come close. He said: this is My Maina [sparrow] then He sat her on His lap. She visited Shirdi often with her father. Baba asked them to stay at Shama's home. The stay would often be for 5-7 days sometime longer, depending on when Baba gave them permission to leave.
Sarojini did her primary education at the Hujurpaga High School Pune. She learned classical music. She played the Harmonium and Dilruba. As she was very talented she mastered both instruments. Having successfully passed many examinations, she had numerous certificates. She married Bhaskar Vinayak Muley, in 1928, and moved to Indore . Her husband worked in the Holkar State Offices at first, and later was in the administrative services of Madhya Pradesh. Upon retiring from the services he did a lot of social work, along with his wife. Sarojini was an office bearer of the Tukogang Bhagani Mandal, and did various charity projects.

Once Kaka visited Shirdi and Baba said ?He had visited his home ?Anand Ashram' in Pune, and found the door locked.' Upon returning home he questioned his wife. She confirmed it saying, she had gone to the Ram Mandir at that time. Sarojini tirelessly worked for Shirdi Sai Baba Sansthan. She was president of the annual Sai Leela Magazine meeting in 1981.

She took Samadhi on 16.11.1998. Her daughter with her family live in Indore.

Activities carried out by Mrs Veena Gupta

Activities carried out by Mrs Veena Gupta
26th Sept 2007

Since 1976 Mrs Veena Gupta is in the saran of Baba. Baba has also fully rewarded her and blessed her. From time to time Baba has shown His blessings indirectly or directly by blessing her with Udi and also with honey. Some times He has also blessed with Ghee and Sindoor from the photos of Maa Durga etc. With the passage of time frequency of Leelas of Baba increased, and from about 1996 Udi was oozing from the photos and statues almost every Thursday. Mrs. Gupta was feeling the presence of Baba almost every Thursday and so she thought to do some special pooja or some thing on Thursdays. We used to have Sri Sai Bajan Sandhya every year, but it was a costly affair. In the year 1999 we came across Sri Sai Amrit Vani and she started reciting Sri Sai Amrit Vani on every Thursday. Soon our family friends joined us and recitation of Sri Sai Amrit Vani was started in the group.

Main activity of Mrs. Gupta is still her Sadhna and Baba. Nothing else interests her. I have also retire from the post of Joint Secretary from Govt. of India with handsome pension. We don't have any financial problems, with the blessings of Baba we have our own house, good pension, sons well settled in Multi National companies on high positions and no liability.

We were totally against devotees offering some thing to Baba at our place. But wishes of Baba were something else. In the year 2000, A known priest of Sai Mandir mentioned that a devotee's son had come to the temple with the kidney problem. He was on dialyses and to meet the expenses of dialyses he has already sold his land in the village. Now he was advised to undergo transplant of kidney. But he is totally broke. He also mentioned that the Dispensary of the Sai Temple has assured him the medicines after the operation. He has got the promises but not the money. One person told him that he will give 1.5 lack rupees if he first collect 51 thousand from others. The Priest asked us if we can do something for him as many people come to our place. I told Mrs. Gupta not to indulge in money maters as I am in Govt. Service and I don't want any trouble. Mrs. Gupta was in a Very bad mood on that Thursday. This news spread through one to other and they told Mrs. Gupta that she should have told them as they generally come without money. After the Sri Sai Amrit Vani and having the lunch there was some murmur among the devotees. At that time we used to sit in the veranda and the mandir was in the kitchen and there was a room in between. Any body going to mandir comes back murmuring. After some time they asked Mrs. Gupta to go to the mandir. To her surprise she found huge amount of money there. By that time many devotees have already left. When the remaining devotees and Mrs. Gupta tried to count, they simply could not do it. As they were so thrilled and surprised. They decided that I will count when I will come back from the office. To the surprise of all, it was 51 Thousand. From where this money came from? No devotee has clamed till now that they have given that money. It was Baba's wish and He has made us the media. This money was given to the person for the operation. Later on our sons also gave some money along with some others and in total one lakh Rs were given.
Almost every year we try to go to Shirdi to have darshan of Baba and also almost every year Mrs. Gupta arranges a Sai Bajan Sandhya at our locality park/compound with the gathering of above 500 people. Where all the devotees are served with proper dinner after the Bajans. In the last Sri Sai Bhajan Sandhya on 24th Feb 2007 there were more than 700 devotees.

In the year 1995 Mrs. Gupta went to Shirdi along with her friend as I could not take the leave from the office. Soon came the Ganesh Chaturthi. Baba started blessing with the Udi from the photo. At that time we were having only the photos and not the statue of Baba. This news spread so wide and so quickly that devotees even from far off places start coming for darshan of Baba. Our whole days were busy in entertaining the devotees. Devotees used to come in the groups and several groups used to be there at the time. Some devotee asked the oil from the Deepak (lamp) to be applied for the portion affected by the paralyses. One women was having the brain tumer. To our surprise people were getting cured. The man was having much relived and the Lady's cat scan was clear. There were many cases like that and people were getting cured. Devotees came till the Ganesh Visarjan. On the day of Ganesh Visarjan we saw the water on the photo and all the Udi vanished. During this time Devotees started offering to Baba and a good sum of money was accumulated. It so happened that soon a devotee came and said that they are constructing a temple, He had retied and he is construcing the temple on the land he is having. He is going to spend all his money in the construction and so he will not be having money for the Statue. Mrs Gupta Gave all the money for the statue, which got collected during these days, without counting it. It was the money of Baba and He was asking it. We have not heard anything from that devotee after that. Now and then we give money for such purposes from our own to our capacity.

Since 1999 we have been reciting Sri Sai Amrit Vani and group Pooja. In 2004, we shifted to Sidhartha Extension from Lodhi Colony. In Lodhi Colony we did not allow any devotee to offer Baba, the money, but devotees used to bring Bhog. The Bhog used to be kept on the table in the varandha and used to be distributed along with the lunch. All the devotees used to be served lunch after the Sri Sai Amrit Vani. Here devotees have started offering money to Baba as we have stopped any outside bhog. On behalf of the devotee we arrange the bhog and put all the bhog in a box, As the gathering here is more, it is quick to give the box of bhog rather than arranging a plate with many items of bhog at the time of distribution of Bhog, We also avoid distribution of any loose or liquid Bhog as it may fall on the floor and come under the feet. We are keeping money of Baba separately, without counting. Out of this money being so collected, Mrs. Gupta has dispersed the money so far as

1. It is the money of Baba and should go to HIM only. So whenever we go to Shirdi, Mrs Gupta put a part of this into the Hundi of Baba.

2. Money is being given for the medicine for the chemotherapy to the poor patients of Cancer through a registered organization.

3. Money is being given to the All India Federation for the Blind.

4. Contribution is being made for the Bhandaras, organized in the temples.

5. Contribution is being made for the construction of the temples.

6. Small helps are being made to the poor students for their studies for books, copies, tution fee etc,

7. Small help is being made for the medicines for the poors.

8. Some times Bhog is also arranged from this amount, as the Prasad from Baba, All depending on the intuitions from Baba.

All the money is kept separately and is not counted. Depending on the availability of money new outlets may be opened. But we don't want to involve much into money matter as it is going to affect our Sadhna.

Satsang Laxman Krishanji Nulkar

Satsang Laxman Krishanji Nulkar

Laxman Krishanji Nulkar

“A star has fallen behind the Masjid”said Baba when Tatya Saheb died. This speaks volumes of love and respect that Baba had for this great devotee. Baba lovingly called him “Tatyaba:’ or ‘Mathara’. Tatya Saheb had a habit of writing about his visits to Shirdi to Nana Saheb Chandorkar. From these letters it is very evident of the deep Rinanubandh that existed between them. Tatya Saheb hailed from Jalgaon; he studied in Pune, worked in Pandharpur, retired and spent the last years at Baba’s feet in Shirdi.

He writes on Friday” I went to Dwarakamai. Baba was sitting with Amirbhai. Sai was smoking the ‘chillum’. He said “Hey desi tambako kadu laagthe’[This indigenous tobacco is bitter “] I had recently gotten excellent Egyptian tobacco for my pipe and had thought would Sai accept some of it. So I said I’d fetch some for Him. Sai saw it and praised it. Amirbhai hastily filled the ‘chillum’. Then Sai took a few puffs. He returned the tin saying “It will be useful for Mhatara. The indigenous tobacco is good for us:’

That very day Tatya Saheb “proposed to get some mango juice made for Baba’s naivedya from the delectable mangoes from Bombay ; but only a few were left. I was praying that that there would be mangoes coming for sale. Shortly there after Shyama comes and says “Baba said “Hey bhag Shyama Shambar ambe ghavya aani pushkal raas kadave aani khub khaava” [‘Look here Shyama, a 100 mangoes should be taken and plenty of juice prepared and eaten to full satisfaction’] In a few minutes a man with a basket of mangoes came along I bought them and had plenty of juice. That Sunday I thought our mangoes were over. But wished and hoped that in the straw one stray mango would be found to send with the naivedya. I asked my wife and she said at the bottom were 4 good ones and 4 rotten ones. So I took out 2 of the best ones to be kept in the naivedya dish. Within 2 minutes Appa Kote came and said Baba wanted 2 mangoes. You can imagine how glad I was. I told Appa to bring back one slice from Baba’s left over. ButAppa forgot. Baba cut one mango and ate it. Then He cut slices from the 2nd one; gave some slices to Shyama and others. Taking the last slice He said “Aapan sagale khatho thya Matharala ekh phank nako kare Shyama [We are eating the mangoes! Shouldn’t that old man get at least one slice. Give this one to him] Then Appa remembered my message and TatyaSaheb continued.

On another visit Tatya Saheb took shira for offering, Baba accepted it. A basket of mangos were placed before Him; He said “Mhataraya la aasu dey kahi udhya khaaeyel ‘kahi parva khaaeyel’ [Keep it for Mhatara. He can eat some tomorrow and some the day after] so the basket was put away. When Sai went to the new Chavadi where we were going to stay. Sai said “Stay at the Wada [Sahebs Dharamshala] He actually took us there. There horses had been tied. The kitchen was just being completed and a lot of mud and debris was lying abou.t Sai said “This is a nice snug and protected place; do you like it?” I said yes we would stay here. Then we came out when Sai said “No Don’t stay here, stay in the new Chavadi! Tomorrow if you like you may go to the Wada” We had reached the new Chavadi and Sai had almost reached the Masjid. When He returned and said in a whisper “Its damp in the Wada so stay in the Chavadi” This letter shows how much Baba cared for Tatya Saheb s comfort.

Satsang The Horse Shyam Karan

Satsang The Horse Shyam Karan

The Horse Shyam Karan

I have often wondered why ‘The Fakir would need a horse? ’The Brhadarnyaka Upanisad #1:v5 describes the zymology of the Horse as follows :

The head of the sacrificial horse is the dawn; its eyes, the sun; its the vital force the ai,r its open mouth, the fire called Vaisvanara, and the body is the year. Its back is heaven, its belly the sky; its hoof the earth; its sides the 4 quarters; its ribs the intermediate quarter, its members the seasons; its joints the months and the fortnight. Its feet, the days and night; its bones the stars; and the flesh the clouds. Its half digested food the sands; its blood vessels the rivers. The liver and spleen the mountains; the hairs the herbs and trees.

Its foreparts the ascending sun. Its yawning, the lightening. The shaking of its body is thunder. It’s making water (passing urine) the rain and its neighing is voice(spoken word).
The word ‘Shyam’ literally means black. A flawless black that is pleasing to the eye. But the word in Hindu mythology could mean pure, pleasing, flawless and beautiful It has been prefixed to other words to convey different meanings. For example Shyam Sunder is used to refer to Shri Krishna.; Shyam Kant or [Shri Shankar]. But Shyam Karan was the name horse or Ashwa of the Ashwamedha. The Rinanubandh between Baba and Shyam Karan was deep and unfathomable. At every Aarati, He danced with joy. And after the Aarati he was the first to bow to Baba. Baba then applied Udi to his forehead, and then gave the rest of the bhaktas Udi. Here the horse that symbolizes the whole cosmos bows before Baba and dances with joy when Baba is worshiped. Little wonder that his Samadhi is in Lendi Baugh.

Baba’s Kafni was made of a coarse [Manjarpat] cloth. In the early days Baba used to wear either an Orange or white Kafni. Then Bala Shimpi stitched a green Kafni for Him. Baba asked him to make only white Kafnis for Him. In the Dwarakamai there would be bundles of Kafnis lying; Baba would often give His Kafni to some of His devotees, they were Balaram Mankar, Udavesa Bua, Kaka Dixit and Tatya Saheb Nulkar just to mention a few.

On one of Nulkars visit to Shirdi he writes “In the afternoon Appa Kote came and stood near the pillar of the Chavadi. He was twisting a rag around his fingers I asked him if his finger was hurt? He said “No” and told me that the rag was a piece from Baba’s Kafni. I asked him why he tore it? He says Baba tears the Kafni for wicks, and this bit was hanging out. I prayed to be given the piece and He gladly gave it. Little did Tatya Shaeb know that Baba would Himself give him His Kafni? One afternoon Baba summoned Tatya Shaeb to the Dwarakamai. Tatya Shaeb ofcourse went immediately. Baba took off His Kafni; and gave it to him saying, “take this, it will keep you warm on cold winter nights”

Here a leela of Baba’s Kafni is appropriate. Jyotindra Tarkad [Sai Sat Charitra #9] was devoted to Baba from a very young age. Their relationship was more than a father and son. On one of his visits to Shirdi this wonderful incident took place. Jyotindra Tarkad was ever willing to do Baba’s seva; without expecting any returns. One day Baba told Jyotindra that He was going to Lendi Baugh, to bathe. He asked him whether he would do a chore for Him. Baba said “Its not a difficult task, I will bathe. Before doing so, I’ll hand you My Kafni. Take it to the well and wash it. As you know I take an extremely long time to bathe, and it will dry in the meantime. But do not allow it to trail on the ground. So hold it up. Okay!” Jyotinder readily agreed. But he institintctively felt that there was a lesson in this chore. Then Baba entered the room to have His bath. Jyotindra waited outside for Baba to hand over His Kafni. After quite a long time he got impatient, as the Kafni was not forthcoming. He decided to peep through the slat in the door. What he saw left him speech less and spellbound. There was Baba, and from each and every pore He was emanating light. The light was so powerful that he feared loosing his sight. He at the same time was repentant for trying to see Baba in the nude. At that very moment Baba called out to him to take the Kafni.

Hastily Jyotindra took the Kafni. He went to the well and carefully washed it, rinsed it and wrung it. Then he stepped in mid day sun and held the Kafni with both hands above his head. As time passed by, the Kafni instead of getting lighter from drying started getting heavier and heavier. His arms ached as time went by and he knew he would fail. As a last resort he started praying to Lord Hanuman. To give him strength to complete the chore, “O! Hanuman, destroyer of Lanka. Give some of your strength so I can fulfill this Seva. O! Hanuman, Bhakta of Rama, help me to perform this service as a Bhakta and sevak of Baba”. His lips moved silently in prayer. Just then Baba yelled “Arre Bhau, why are you praying to Hanuman for help.” At that very moment the Kafni started getting lighter. Needless to say Jyotindra confessed to Baba and begged for forgiveness.

Satsang RamChandra Dada Patil

Satsang RamChandra Dada Patil

RamChandra Dada Patil

How great was the Rinanubandh of these two? Their love was deep and unfathomable! Ramchandra was born in Shirdi. He was the only son of Radhabai and Dada Kote Patil. Ramchandra had 3 sisters. He was born to affluence, his ancestral property spread far and wide in Shirdi and neighboring villages which yielded many all types of grain and sugar cane. Hence he had only to supervise the laborers.

Ram Chandra was very bright and he studied up to 7th std [Marathi Medium] but most of all he was interested in legal system He was responsible for incorporating the village of Beragaon into Shirdi [Maruti Mandir has 2 Vighras one for Shirdi and one for Beragaon] It’s said that in those days the boundary of Shirdi was up to the Chavadi beyond which was Beragaon.

He was the Secratary of Dakshina Bhiksha Sanstha. Baba’s seva he started doing at the tender age of 11years, he had immense faith in Baba and took Babas word as law. In 1916 he was extremely sick and dying of Influenza [Ref Sai-Sat-Charitra # 42] Baba gave him shatshatkar and said “Tu gabro nakos ,tula pushkal aayuse ahaya”[Don’t be afraid you have a long life ahead of you] Ramchandra was greatly relieved to hear this and he immediately asked about his friend Tatya, Baba however said “Two years from today Tatyas death will occur, but don’t tell this to anyone!.” Ramchandra did recover, but he could not bear what Baba said so he told Bala Shimpi who was a dear friend of his. Tatya was a dear friend since childhood and they grew up together. Baba strengthened this bond between them ‘by making them eat out of the same plate daily in the Dwaraka mai.’

Ram Chandra was married to Sitabai but as she did not bore him any children, he remarried and had 2 sons. After Baba’s Maha Samadhi the devotees were working the whole night to get the Samadhi ready. Mir Shakar a Phelwan [body builder] of Kohrale saw the developments and went to Appaji Kote Patil Ramchandra’s grand father and managed to convince him, that it was bad for the village to keep a dead body in it. Besides they were going to build the Samadhi in Butti Wada. So they would get a Brahmin priest whom so ever they wanted. Then they could lock the building and Muslims would not be able to enter. This appealed to Appaji and he called a meeting and told the villagers his views. Then the villagers agreed to take the body out of Shirdi.

Ramchandra heard this and disagreed saying that Baba’s last wish should be followed and honored. This enraged Appaji and he told him not to step into his house again. Ramchandra agreed, as he was determined to honor Baba’s wish at any cost. He did not enter his grand fathers residence for 12 years. Although his first wife Sitabai resided there. Tatya was well revered in the village and he sided with Ramchandra. The villagers met again but there was a split a few people agreed with Appaji but most of the younger villagers were adamant to honor Baba’s wish. Single handedly he set out to convince the devotees that had gathered in Shirdi for Baba’s Maha Samadhi about the importance of honoring Baba’s last wish, and he succeeded.

For 36 hours the body lay in Dwarakamai. At 4pm on Thursday the body was placed in the Samadhi after a grand merunik [procession] through the village. On the 13th day he arranged for a feast. The devotees distributed laddus to 1000’s and 1000’s of devotees and wonder of wonders the same number of laddus remained after every distribution. Thus for 2 months laddus were distributed to all the devotees who attended and those who could not attend. I for one have a special place in my heart for a great devotee. And I am eternally grateful to him and Gopal Rao Butti for gifting us the Samadhi and Samadhi Mandir.

Butti was extremely fond of this young man and he often invited him to Nagpur. Butti asked him to stay with him and help him with his business but Ramchandra could not bear the thought of leaving Shirdi.

Ramchandra was Sarpang [head official] of the Shirdi gram panchyat for 20 yrs. The Nagar Palika has a photograph of his hanging in their office. Along with these duties, he actively participated in the Shirdi Sai Baba Sansthan and was the Joint secretary for a long time. Ramchandra would get up early in the morning and have a cup of tea after that he would eat nothing till the noon Aarati. He attended the Aarati daily and was never sick for a single day. He died at the age of 70. That day he had invited some guests for lunch and they were late in coming, so his family suggested that he have his lunch. He replied that he would wait for the noon Aarati. He sat down, as he was feeling giddy. Before they could seek medical help; he quietly and peacefully breathed his last. His descendents still live in Shirdi.

“Get up from here”, said a voice in a loud confrontational manner. The devotee looked around but could not see anyone at first. Rather confused, he wondered where the person was who gave him this order. It was Purnima (Full moon night) and he could see everything clearly. The ground itself was bathed in the moonlight and even a pinhead could be found in the brightness. It was a little past midnight and the devotee had gone outside to relieve himself. He was behind the Banyan Tree behind Dikshit Wada. A little later, he heard something rustling amongst the fallen leaves. Thinking, it might be a snake, he was very alert. Then he noticed ‘the spirit’ who was clothed in a white garment and looked like a man. The spirit spoke again, “This is my territory, so you better leave.” The devotee looked with great concentration as he was afraid. But the spirit added, “You are rather confident of the old man’s grace (Baba’s grace) and protection, aren’t you?” As soon as this was said, the devotee stood up, and was calm. “Yes, come closer and show yourself.” The spirit started moving closer and was about 2-3 feet away from the devotee.
“Stop right there or I’ll call Baba and He will reduce you to ashes”, warned the devotee. Hearing this, the spirit rose to the top of the tree and disappeared. The devotee walked back to his room. At first, he thought, he would tell his mother about the incident, but fearing that she might be frightened, he kept quiet. The next morning, after bathing, he went to Dwarkamai, and prostrated before Baba and sat down quietly. “Bhau, what did you see last night”, asked Baba. “Baba, I saw a ghost”, said the devotee. Then Bab said, “Arre Bhau, that was me.” Puzzled, the devotee replied, “No Baba, it was a ghost, and I spoke to it.” “It was me Bhau, ask your mother”, said Baba. The devotee turned to his mother, who said, “Yes, Baba is in everything. Man, bird, beast, and spirits too.” Besides, spirits are in Baba’s control. Thus, the devotee, Babasaheb Tarkhad, learnt a very valuable lesson.

Satsang Shyamdas and Daxina

Satsang Shyamdas and Daxina

While on the pilgrimage to Dwarka, Shyamdas was reading Atwala’s Dnyaneshwari. His purse along with the tickets had fallen into the sea. That day he couldn’t concentrate on the chapter and read it rather mechanically. It was then that he took a negative decision. “I will not read any scripture till Baba tells me to.” After his trip, he came to Shirdi. At that time, Baba did not ask for daxina, nor did he give any. The subject of reading any religious books did not arise and he returned home. He wrote letters to Baba on Ekadashi, and received a reply. Thus, 2-3 years passed. Once, Chidambar Keshav Gadgil read out Shyamdas’ letter to Baba. Baba said, “Call him here. Ask him to come quickly.”

Shyamdas went to Shirdi within 4-5 days of receiving the reply. Baba asked him daily for Rs.11/-, which he readily gave for ten days. Everyday, he would go to Dwarkamai at about 3:30 in the afternoon and only at that time would Baba ask for dakshina. On the eleventh day, as usual, Baba asked for dakshina. Shyamdas had no money left. “Baba, I’ve no money left to give dakshina. You tell me, where am I to get the money from. In lieu, I offer my ten Indryas and mind”, to which Baba replied, “They are mine already. Who are you to give them? Go to Bapusaheb Butti and borrow Rs.11/- and give them to Me.” Upon hearing this, Shyamdas got up to go and get the money. Hardly had he reached the gate of the Sabha Mandap, when Baba called out to him, “Arre Shyam, come here; bring the eleven rupees later. But bring them from Bapusaheb Jog. Now be seated.” After taking Udi and Prasad and left for the Wada and clean forgot about the eleven rupees. At 3:30 , he went for darshan, but Baba did not ask for the eleven rupees. In the evening, He said, “Go to Bapusaheb Jog and ask him for eleven rupees and bring him along with you.”

Shyamdas went to the Wada and found Jog reading the Eknath Bhagwad to a few devotees. He told Jog what Baba had said. Both of them went to the Masjid. Baba was getting ready to go out. Upon seeing them, He blessed them, but did not ask for dakshina. Later, they returned to the Wada, when the other devoteed asked Shyamdas about this episode of ‘eleven rupees dakshina’ and what was its meaning. Shyamdas had not pondered over it. Everyday, thereafter, both of them went to Baba, but Baba did not ask for dakshina.

On the fourth day, it was in the evening, when Baba asked Jog, “So, how many rupees did you distribute today”, to which Jog replied, “Sixty-one rupees. Butti, received fifty rupees and Shyamdas eleven. Shyamdas was silent all this time when Baba said, “Did you get the eleven rupees?” Without understanding its significance, Shyamdas said yes. Then Baba said, “No, you didn’t. Let us see tomorrow. In the meantime, have a look at the pothi, okay?” They returned to the Wada and started discussing what Baba could have meant by asking for eleven rupees. Balasaheb Bhate was astute enough to connect the dakshina with the reading of Eknath Bhagwad. Suddenly, Shyamdas remembered how he had taken a decision not to read any Pothi unless directed by Baba to do so. Later, he went to the Masjid, and Baba told them a long story which is given below.

“We were two brothers on a long journey. While walking on a path, the brother went ahead. He was bitten by a serpent and died. I was walking steadily and way behind him. Just then, 5-6 people came and enquired of me, where the brother was. I told them that he died following a snake-bite and I had already buried him. They did not believe me. ‘We will go and search for him and bring him back’, they said. I cautioned them, saying, ‘There is a huge serpent there. It will bite you too. Why are you going there?’ But they did not head my words. They did go there and were killed by the serpent. I buried them also and continued my journey. Then, a strong lady came and asked me where the brother was. I told her that the huge serpent bit him and was buried by me. Then she enquired about the six men and I told her how they went looking for the brother and were killed by the serpent. She was anxious to go there and find the brother. I said, ‘Why are you going there needlessly. You will not find that brother’, to which she replied, ‘I will go there and diligently search for him, find him and bring him back.’ Thus, she went ahead, she too met the same fate. I buried her too. Then I continued my journey and went a long distance and met 5-6 Muslims who said, ‘Wait a while.’ I waited. The Muslims got a goat and killed it and cut it into pieces. These, they brought to me and said, ‘Eat’. I said, ‘No. I am a Brahmin and I cannot eat it.’ When one of them took a piece and thrust it towards my lips, trying to make me eat it, I said, ‘Just wait a while. I will pray to God, then eat it.’ I took a piece of cloth and held it to my mouth and thought of God. Lo! The pieces of meat turned into roses. Huge beautiful roses that you couldn’t find anywhere, even in Shirdi. Then those Muslims went away. I continued my journey. When I looked back, there was water, crystal clear, and a small pathway ahead. I walked a short distance, and there was water on either side, behind and in front of me, without any pathway. This is the doing of Allah Malik. Allah Malik is the savior of the poor.”

The next day, Baba was in a tearing rage right from early morning till noon . Some of his devotees received his wrath in the form of beatings and abuses. But his daily routine went on as usual. Shyamdas went to the Dwarkamai at 3:30 p.m. and did Charan Seva. Baba said, “You received the eleven rupees, didn’t you Shyam?” to which he replied, “If the eleven rupees is regarding the reading of the pothi, then yes. But which pothi am I supposed to read. Then, Baba gave a clue of the rinanubandhu of theirs, saying, “Read that pothi in which there is a dialogue between you me.” This sentence further confused him. Should he read Gita or Dnyaneshwari? Baba said, “Arre Shyamdas, go to Bapusaheb Jog and bring the pothi that he is reading.” He did so and Baba opened the book at random and the eleventh chapter of Eknath Bhagwad opened and pointing to it, Baba said, “Read this, everyday of your life. Read it just as it is written and understand it for yourself. Don’t explain or expound it to other people. Only you need to know and understand it. Allah Malik will do good.”
