Satsang BABA'S SAYINGS AND HAPPENINGS

By T.A. Ram Nathen

First give up all ideas of enjoyment in this world and the next, care only for God and Truth. We are here to know truth, not for enjoyment. Leave that to brutes that enjoy as we never can. Man is a thinking being and must struggle on until he conquers death, until he sees the light. He must not spend himself in vain talking that bears no fruit. Worship of society and popular opinion is idolatry. The soul has no sex, no country, no place, no time.

Swami Vivekananda says here, that happen there, so said Sai Baba. And how? Only a saint knows another saint and his ways. Avatar Meher Baba has enlightened us on the mysterious ways of Sai Baba's sayings and happenings. Meher Baba has said: "....... the Jivatma in the gross sphere uses the mind through gross matters; in the subtle sphere, He uses the mind directly without the aid of gross and subtle means."

Strictly speaking, unless and until the mental sphere is reached, none really knows what the mind actually is much less to do things through the medium of the mind itself to bring our tangible results.

Suppose a pilgrim in Egypt reaches the mental sphere and conceives the idea of visiting America, the pilgrim has not even to think about America; but simultaneously with a wish on his part to be there he will find himself actually there speedier than the time it takes to think about America in the ordinary way. And how does the pilgrim travel faster than the thought itself? Because he does not, strictly speaking, travel as the mind is everywhere. The pilgrim in the mental sphere, whom we address as ?Mahaan', ?Vali', ?Maha Yogi', can be anywhere he likes without availing his gross and subtle organs.

In the gross and subtle spheres, the souls work with full consciousness through the media of the mind, gross and subtle organs. While in the mental sphere, the soul works with full consciousness through the mind itself without necessarily using the gross and subtle organs. If the room is dark, the constant feeling and repeating of darkness will not take it away, but bring in the light. Let us know that all that is negative all that is destructive is bound to pass away. It is the positive, the affirmative, the constructive, that is immortal, and that will remain forever.....

-Swami Vivekananda.

Satsang A meaningful Touch

A meaningful Touch

During the war, a boy was brought into the hospital badly wounded। Word was sent to the mother that the boy was dying. She came to the hospital and begged to see him, but the doctors said that he was just hovering between life and death and that the slightest excitement might kill him. Besides, he was unconscious and would not know her. She promised that she would not speak to him or make the slightest noise, but begged to sit by the side of his bed and be with him. The doctor relented and gave permission for her to sit there without a word. She sat by her boy with her heart bursting. His eyes were closed. She gently put her hand upon his brow. Without opening his eyes the boy whispered. 'Mother, you have come. ?The touch of that mother's hand was self-verifying to the boy. Did you have any such experience from your mother, father, brother, sister or friend?

Satsang BABA CONFERS POWERS ON SOME OF His DEVOTEES

By R. Seshadri

Kasinath Sastri was born in a poor purohit's family in a tiny Maharashtra town. He evinced no interest in education. Considered as a good for nothing lad by not only his family but the other village folk also, he tried to eke out a living later by learning Ayurveda and started dispensing medicines to patients. Years later, he became Upasani Maharaj with yogic powers and a large following of devotees in the country. It was Sai Baba of Shirdi who brought about this great transformation. Even today Baba is helping his devotees through some of his chosen ?bhaktas' by confirming on them curative and other powers. In this context, Sai devotees should guard against pseudo saints proclaiming His name to serve their personal interests.

In a brief account of an literate rustic woman, who has been blessed by Sainath Maharaj with predictive and curative powers. Eighty three-old Mullayamma of Mulangudi village of Thanjavur District (Tamil Nadu) lives along with her only son, Periasami, in a hut a precarious life. Hearing about her from friends, a pious sadhaka took me to her some months back. Baba's portrait and meager pooja materials greet those who get into her hut. (1C, Yanaiyadi Street, Melacauvery, Kumbakonam-612 002 Tamil Nadu).
After formal introduction, Mullaiammal, holding a silver paper on her right palm, started giving details about me. She also said that I was frequenting a Sai Shrine at my place and three deities are worshipped there. She was able to describe the location and other details of Sri Sai Spiritual Centre at Bangalore.
When I asked her about the health of my friend's wife, she immediately pointed out her malady. When asked how she gained these powers, she and her son, Periasami, gave the following account. Even as a five-year old she had experienced unusual visions. When she was ten, she was blessed by Kanchi Paramacharya, who gave her some herbs as prasad. She was able to identify lost articles and where they could be found, by starting at the mud floor of her hut.
At this time, during her sleep at night, she started hearing Shirdi Sai Baba asking her to gaze at her own palm. Though she ignored the call in the beginning, after persistent instructions from Baba, she was thrilled to find Baba's image on her palm. Then she surrendered to Baba, who has been responding to her queries whenever people approach her with their problems. She claims to have diagnosed major maladies and had also successfully prescribed remedies. She even gives details of her astral flights by Baba's grace. She speaks Tamil only. With all this, hers is a hand-to-mouth existence. She gratefully accepts money being offered by her visitors to keep the pot boiling.

WHEN I SAW SAI...

When I Saw Sai...
By: Hebbar

He had come into my life through different means, many a times. Then, I was naive and did not know the deeper meaning hidden in them. Today when I look back I understand that all was in divine plan.

It all began years ago, my sister found her strength in Shirdi Sai. She was His ardent devotee and so I was surrounded by His books, stories, et al. Nothing of this however, stirred 'that' chord in me. Then one day He came into my house, when a friend visiting Shirdi gifted me His idol. I placed Him in my prayer room with the other God's idols. Life went on....

During one of my regular TV channel surfings I chanced upon a serial based on the life of Shirdi Sai Baba. I saw it for a few minutes and went back to surfing. After a week, again I came across the same serial, which of course I saw for a few minutes and moved on. This happened for a while and I gradually started watching the serial for longer. Finally there came a day when I became a regular viewer of the serial.

Throughout the time of the serial, I was glued to the TV. I felt as if I was receiving answers to many complex questions of life. Somehow it made perfect sense and sat well on the situations and problems in my life. Was it just a coincidence or was there something more to it? I thought the latter. Days rolled by and one evening when I was watching the serial, I felt that Baba was asking me to visit Shirdi. I ignored the call and continued with my life. Six weeks later when I was watching the serial again, I heard Baba say "I asked you to come to Shirdi and you are ignoring me." It was a wake up call for me and I decided to leave to Shirdi immediately.

I decided to visit the Sai Baba temple in town at the earliest. Couple of days later as I was stepping into the temple, I saw the flower placed on Baba fall on the ground. I thought it was a good omen and I asked Baba to make my trip to Shirdi comfortable. I then remembered what people had said very often, "only if Baba wills, can you step on the soil of Shirdi."

As the queue was moving, I was going closer to Baba. I was just near him when all of a sudden, people in front of me made way

That evening I informed my parents about my plan to visit Shirdi and they immediately said that they knew a person who could be of help in Shirdi.

Finally I was on my way to Shirdi not knowing what to expect. I was not sure why Baba had repeatedly asked me to come to Shirdi. The bus journey of over 21 hours was comfortable and I reached Shirdi.

The man known to my parents had taken care of everything, including my stay, food and VIP darshan. This I took as a welcome sign from Him, for without His will no one could step on the soil of Shirdi.

On a bright very hot day, I stepped on the soil of Shirdi and that moment will remain etched in my memory forever. Everything taken care, I went into the temple for the darshan. For those who don't know, thousands of devotees throng the temple and for a darshan you would have to wait in queue for long hours. I however had a VIP pass and so went in easily. Sai in all his splendour had adorned his throne in the temple. It is an overwhelming experience which cannot be expressed in words.

Since there is a huge crowd of devotees, you get less than two seconds to see Him from close. As the queue was moving, I was going closer to Baba. I was just near him when all of a sudden, people in front of me made way and I stood there close to Baba uninterrupted, for long. This was an unusually long period than what one usually gets. Thrilled I was that I had finally made it. With joy in my heart I left the temple premises.

BABA'S ALL PERVASIVENESS...

............ . Baba’s All Pervasiveness

Baba had become one with every being in the world. Hence the service of any creature ultimately reached Baba.
A lady lived in Shirdi and would daily bake two breads- one for Baba and another for herself. One day she was taking the bread for Baba when a dog approached her, licking its lips in hunger. Instantly, by some inner urge, she offered the bread to the dog. She went back and started again to take the other bread for Baba. Now a pig approached her and she offered him that bread too. Then she realized that she had nothing to give to Baba, she felt intensely sorry and mentally asked Baba’s pardon. Later, she went to Baba and sat down with folded hands. Immediately Baba said, “Ma, today you offered me bread twice so that was doubly satisfied.” The lady thought Baba was taunting her for not giving him anything. Remorsefully she cried, ”Baba today I had nothing left with me. So what could I bring for you? Baba replied “Ma you offered one bread to a dog and another to a pig. They both reached me, because I am one with them.

Once a lizard, perch on a wall in the Dwarkamai, began chirping vigorously. This considered to be an ill-omen. So a devotee asked Baba what evil it portended. Baba said, “ There is no evil portend in this. The lizard’s sister will presently come here from Aurangabad to meet her. So she is singing in joy.
”Everyone thought that Baba was joking". As was his won't. But very soon a bhakta arrived from Aurangabad for Baba’s darshan. As he opened his sack, a lizard jumped out. Straightaway she scaled the wall and embraced her ‘sister’. Their gesticulations definitely showed that they were overjoyed to meat each other. How could Baba know all this before hand? All were convinced that the two lizards were sisters.

A darvesh had tamed a tiger that used to do certain tricks and thus maintain himself and his master. As the tiger grew old, he could no longer play tricks. Naturally, he and his master both had to face starvation. Ultimately, the tiger became mad and uncontrollable.
As he was approaching his end, the darvesh brought him to Baba for his last grace. Baba asked the darvesh to release the animal whom at once became quiet. Approaching Baba he prostrated himself at Baba ‘s feet and as Baba was stroking his back, the tiger opened his jaw and breathed his last. Baba said,”This was a great bhakta of Lord Shiva. He has gone to Kailasa. Now bury his mortal remains in front of Shiva.”

Satsang SAI BABA PRESIDES OVER CONFERENCE OF MASTERS

SAI BABA PRESIDES OVER CONFERENCE OF MASTERS
By Bhau Kalchuri

I am lost in the rapture of the song that sings of my immortal Beloved
His sweet name stills my mind striking within unstuck chords that
waken hidden cadences. I hear celestial melodies And through my being
runs A nectar-a bliss unsurpassing. Am on the crest of a divine
perfection Feeling: "am one, I am all."

Late Shi Sadashiv Govind Shelke Patil was the chief of the fisherman
community at KasbaPeth. He was very close to Upasani Maharaj in his
love and devotion. He was one of those whom Upasani Maharaj advised to
follow Meher Baba. The following incident was narrated by Patil which
happened in 1919, after Baba's Mahasamadhi.

Upasani Maharaj asked Patil to go to Benares along with Merwan (Meher
Baba then known), with instructions to acquire a place for their stay
and to collect articles required for a great yagna (sacrifice) he
wished to perform. The Maharaj also told Patil that it was going to be
a conference of all Masters of the Spiritual Realm, which would be
presided over by Sai Baba. Patil felt funny when he heard this and
expressed surprise, because Sai Baba had already left his body on 16
October, 1918. Sensing this, the Maharaj said, "Do as I say, and don't
worry. You will not understand this". A perfect Master's words and
actions are often clothed in mystery, because God's ways of
functioning in the affairs of all men and creatures are hidden. When
Patil enquired as to how the Maharaj would come to Benares, he simply
said that he would be found at a certain place near the Railway
Bridge. And there he was!

Patil and Merwan traveled by train and reached Benares, hired a place
as instructed by the Maharaj and placed their luggage.

Preparations began for the performance of the Mahayagna - great
sacrificial offerings to the Fire God. A large number of Brahmin
Pundits chanting Vedic hymns under a spacious mandap, throwing grains
and various other articles into the fire. Sai Baba's photo was placed
prominently garlanded at the centre of the large mandap. When Patil
saw this spectacle, with Sai Baba's photo in the centre, he realized
what Upasani Maharaj meant when he told him that Sai Baba would preside.

Merwan and Patil would go to the market daily and purchase all that
was required for the meals for a large number of people gathered for
the occasion. Meals were specially prepared by Brahmins under the
supervision of Merwan and Patil, who were in charge of the food
arrangement.

The great sacrificial fire burned continually for eleven days and on
the twelfth day a feast in honor of the Brahmins was held. Over ten
thousand Brahmins had gathered and food for all of them was ready by
noon. But when the Brahmins sat down under the large mandap for their
meal and saw the large photo of Sai Baba, some raised an uproar
exclaiming, "We cannot join in the feast of a Muslim! Sai Baba was a
Muslim!"

Upasani Maharaj who was of Brahmin descent, advised them to forget
their religious prejudices and opinions and to partake of the food. He
explained to them that Sai Baba was a Perfect Master and thus above
religious distinctions.

Upasani Maharaj could not persuade the Brahmins to share in the feast
and He refused to take the painting of Sai Baba down. At last Upasani
Maharaj instructed all of his devotees, who were present in the
gathering to go to the banks of the Ganges River and to strike drums
to call for the poor to gather there. Merwan and Sadashiv joined by
Upasani Maharaja's several hundred devotees served the food to the
poor who gathered. Although nearly fifteen thousand poor people were
fed, there was a considerable amount of food left over, Upasani
Maharaj then directed, "Throw the remaining food into the river! This
greatly shocked the Hindu priests who saw bucket after bucket being
flung into the river. They then approached Upasani Maharaj and begged
for his pardon saying, "Great one, we are now ready to partake of the
food. Do not waste the food - forgive us."

Sadguru Upasani Maharaj angrily retorted," You call yourselves the
pundits of Kashi! What can I say about you priests? There is nothing
in Kashi for you and there is no food left either! I forgive you, but
you will not partake of the feast. He, Sai Baba, whom you call a
Muslim, is the real Pundit!" Upasani Maharaj then angrily sent the
priests away and bade his seven hundred follower's farewell.

RAISING THE WATER LEVEL IN WELL....STORIES OF SHIRDI BABA...

RAISING THE WATER LEVEL IN THE WELL...
..... ......... ......... .........
...... ......... ......... ........
Raising the water level in well
When Sai Baba first came to Shirdi it had of no basic facilities. There was a well put only in name. It had no natural spring water and if
ever there had been one, it must long ago have dried up. Water had to be fetched from a distance. When, therefore, Sai Baba gave his
permission to the villagers to celebrate the Ram Navami Fair, (Baba's Birthday) the big problem facing the organizers was one of water
supply. So What should they do but go to Sai Baba with their problem? "'Oh yes," said Sai Baba, 'so you want plenty of water, do you?
Here, take this and drop it in the well and wait and see." "'This," turned up to be a platter of flowers on which some prasad (blessed
food) had been placed along with the remnants of alms Baba had received earlier in the day. The villagers had no qualms about doing as
they were did. Their faith in Sai Baba was total. No sooner had that platter of leaves been dropped in the well, it is said, water rose from
the bottom as if by divine command and completely filled it. And great was the rejoicing of the people.

Saving a child from drowning
One report has it that word had spread that the 3-year old daughter of a poor man called Babu Kirwandikar had fallen into the well and
had been drowned. When the villagers rushed to the well they saw the child suspended in mid-air as if some invisible hand was holding
her up! She was quickly pulled out. Sai Baba was fond of that child who was often heard to say : I am Baba's sister!" After this incident,
the villagers took her at her word. "it is all Baba's Leela", the people would say philosophically. They could offer no other explanation.

Flow of Godavari (river) from Baba's feet
These were instances of things they had seen with their own eyes. It was not secondhand information they had gathered. Sai Baba was
to them as real as their homes and their fields and their cattle and the distant hills.Das Ganu once had an unforgettable experience. On
a festive occasion, he sought Baba's permission to go to a place called Singba on the banks of the Godavari to have a bath in the holy
waters. "No," Baba replied resolutely, "where is the need to go all the way when the Godavari is here right at my feet?" Das Ganu was
vexed. He was willing to concede that Ganga the holy river (Baba frequently referred to Godavari as Ganga) rose from the feet of Sri
Narayana (one among the Hindu trinity of Gods) himself, but his faith was not deep enough to believe that the waters of the Godavari
could spring form the feet of his master, Sri Sai. Baba who was reading Das Ganu's mind decided that this was the time to strengthen
Das Ganu's faith. He told his devotee: "come closer to me and hold the hollow of your palms at my feet!". As soon as he did so water
flowed freely out of the toes of the master's feet and filled the hollow of Das Ganu's palms in no time. His joy knew no limits. He
sprinkled the water on his head and his body and distributed some more among the assembled devotees as tirtha (holy water).

The Shrine of All Saints

Pilgrimages will not help thee!

Thou wilt fail to find the Truth as long as thou

will not look beyond the books into the Heart within.

Verily, in the Hear is the shrine of all

Prophets and Saints

Baba's miracles are a living legend and bring bliss to any devotee at any time and I am one among millions of Sai-devotees who have experienced that he is close behind our thoughts and is taking care of us in every moment of our lives. I stay in a first floor flat in Virar, Mumbai and my neighbors who stay in the ground floor (Yogesh Patel, his wife and a son Jash) are Gujarathis and ardent Sai-devotes. One evening recently the boy master Jash came to our flat and asked me surprising questions,

"Uncle, are you a Sai Bhakta? Why are you worshipping Sai Baba?" asked the six year old Jash. I replied to him "I am doing pooja just like your going to school. I am a Sai sewak and do not call myself a Sai Bhakta."

He queried 'Uncle, what is the difference between a Sewak and a Bhakta." I told him "Sai sewak is a humble servant, who offers service to needy persons, read Sai-literature, perform pooja every day and spread his gospel. A Sai-bhakta is an apostle of Sai Baba who can see Him 'eye to eye', talk to Him and convey His messages to trusted devotees and protect them from all sorts of hurdles."

He listened to me keenly. His next query put me off guard. "Uncle, do you wish to speak with Baba?" I told him "I wish to speak to Sai Baba. But Baba is not free to talk with ordinary mortals like me." He said: "Uncle, you have to fast, meditate and offer flowers regularly for two years and then you can also talk to Sai Baba. In a huff, he ran away to play. These words of a six year old boy made me think deeply. As if an answer, I came across a quotation of Sri Ramakrishna within the next few seconds. "Some times God acts as the magnet and the devotee as the needle; God attracts the devotee to Himself; again sometimes the devote acts as the magnet and God as the needle. Such is the attractions of the devotee that God comes to him unable to resist his love."

I felt what Jash told me was not his own. It is a transparent command of Baba through him to me to attain a higher spiritual plane. The whole night I was thinking about this, and the difficulties to obtain flowers as we live in the first floor of the apartment.

The next morning, 22nd July 1997, it was Thursday. The door bell rang and on opening it I saw Mrs.Yogesh Patel with a basket of flowers. She mumbled that they have plenty of flowers in their garden and I am free to collect everyday. My joy knew no bounds. I could not control my emotions and stretched out both my hands and accepted the basket with flowers from Mrs. Patel and saw Sai Baba in her. I remembered the Vedic verse "Bhagawan Manushya Roopena" and offered my tearful tributes to Baba and Jash's Mother too.

SAI BABA AND LOST HORSE OF CHANDBHAI...14.11.2007

SAI BABA AND LOST HORSE OF CHANDBHAI...14.11.2007

Sai Baba and the Lost Horse of ChandBhai
In Maharashtra, there is a district named Aurangabad, in which there is a village named Dhoopkhed. Chandbhai was the patel of that village.
Once he lost his horse. Chandbhai searched and searched, but to no avail. A week after, while he was on the search, he noticed by the roadside a young lad of sixteen, having sedate looks and wearing the garb of a fakir.
This beautiful boy with lustrous eyes at once captured Chandbhai’s heart. Reading, as if the onlooker’s mind, the fakir beckoned Chandbhai and asked,
“What are you looking for, patel?”
“I have lost my horse. For this whole week, I am searching him,” said Chand, approaching the fakir, with folded hands.
“Then why go further? Your animal is grazing beyond that hedge, there, look!” told the fakir, with a gentle smile, pointing to a thick hedge beyond which nothing could really be seen. Chandbhai went and saw, and lo! The horse was found quietly grazing there.
Chandbhai was awe-struck. How did this fakir recognize him as the patel, how did the boy know that there was a horse beyond the hedge and that it belonged to him – all this struck him with wonder. He was convinced that the boy had a spark of Divinity in him. As Chandbhai related this incident among his friends and neighbours, the boy’s fame spread like a drop of oil on the surface of water.
A few months later, a marriage procession went from Dhoopkhed to Shirdi. The boy-fakir also accompanied it.
When the procession reached the outskirts of Shirdi, it stopped to pay homage to God khandoba. Mhalsapati, the priest of Khandoba temple, eyed the fakir, and, out of spontaneous admiration, exclaimed, ”welcome, ye Sai Baba”.
It was as if the Divine Will that had given the boy this name, for that very name stuck to him all his life. From that day (1854), the boy stayed in Shirdi.

THE UNIQUENESS OF SHIRDI BABA'S MESSAGE OF GOD REALIZATION...14.11.2007

THE UNIQUENESS OF SHIRDI BABA'S MESSAGE OF GOD REALIZATION...14.11.2007

14.11.2007
CONTRIBUTED ARTICLE: All or None?
The uniqueness of Baba's message of God-realization outside the realm of religion is by no means considered as a discounting attitude to any given set of practices. On the other hand, this may be an all-inclusive approach that regards and respects everything under the sun with the disposition that God is all-the dispenser and it is not for us to judge.

Spiritual Experiences

A few practices under the name of religion cannot make the whole religion as superstitious. Divisive attitude in the name of discrimination has its limitations. On the other hand, the attitude that "everything is Sai" prepares a seeker to receive the more important realization of the self -

a natural process that constant contemplation on Sadguru would lead one to. As mentioned in several earlier occasions, all or none is not an approach to Sai devotion but everything and anything with the faith that unless Baba wills nothing comes to us - including the opportunities to serve and seek him.

As devotee Kamala Pallesenna wrote last week, in spirituality one size does not fit all and not everything that Sai gives us appear sweet. The best recourse is to pass the burden on to Sai and learn to wait.

It is easy to give in to the tricks of discrimination and lose the basic tenets of Sai devotion - humility and compassion to fellowmen. It is a fortune to have the blessings and taste the grace of Baba and a challenge yet to remain meek and humble just the way our Lord showed us.

The attitude that "I am holier than you" is not a sign of humility. At the same time, one's enthusiasm in sharing the love and devotion to Sainath of Shirdi and willingness to help the needy should not be judged as showmanship but be seen in the best of lights, as a noble intention at the feet of Lord Sai.

Hemadpanth's reference to subtle ego is probably a daily reminder to Sai devotees. All Sai bandhus all over the world who rely on Sai Vichaar for Baba's love and compassion can benefit from the understanding that Sai Vichaar is done by a group of volunteers with diligence, love and devotion to Sadguru Sainath, and with the only intention of sharing His love and message. Happy New Year to all. Bow to Sri Sai Peace be to all.

Sri Sai Amrit Vani and Prayan of Sai Leelamrit

Sri Sai Amrit Vani and Prayan of Sai Leelamrit
15th Nov 2007
Jai Sai Ram
The week was full of festiwals and Baba's presence was felt throughout the week. Mrs Gupta did not removed the Udi on Thursday night. On Friday it was Deewali, Saturday it was Aan Koot (Goverdhan pooja). On Sunday it was Bhai Dhooj. On Monday the word "Subh Labh" which appeared on the photo of Baba simply disappeared. But all the other words and figures remained there on the photo. ThisThursday night Mrs Gupta removed all the Udi and cleaned all the photos and Statue.
Following devotees participated in absencia in the recitation of Sri Sai Amrit Vani, Pooja, prayers to Baba ( Shirdi) and Prayan of Sri Sai Satcharitra* by reciting Sri Sai Amrit Vani at their places on 15th Nov 2007 (The list is sorted as per their email ids, to avoid duplications) . However Mrs. Gupta prayed for all the devotees. In this list only those devotees are included, who themselves recited or read Sri Sai Amrit Vani at their places.
This Thursday the 15th Nov 2007. we enjoyed the following Leelas of Baba (of Shirdi).
1. Due to the festiwal season Udi was continuously oozing from last Thursday from the two photos on the wall and Hindi words `RAM' `SHAM' and `OM', and figure of Trishool were formed with Udi on one photo. Udi was also oozing from the photo and statue in the mandir and also forming the words `RAM' , `SHAM' and `OM' on the photo . There was Swastic symbol also formed on the main photo in the mandir and also on the photo of Laxmi ji, Ganesh Ji and Baba.
2. On Last Thursday the word "Shub Labh" in Hindi was formed on the main photo in the mandir and on Monday the word "Shub Labh" simply disappeared.
3. This Thursday the Holy Water started oozing from the Charans from Thursday morning. Thali was emptied several times. The taste of water was similar to gulab jal and kewara mix. This water was also given to the devotees and again the Thali was filled with water.
4. Lap of Mrs. Gupta was filled with lots of Udi during the prayers.
5. Several devotees had Udi in the books of Sri Sai Amrit Vani and on themselves during the pooja.
6. On Thursday as soon as Bhog was offered, it was duly accepted by Baba. We noticed that the Bhog , which was placed before HIM was partially eaten. Part of Bhog was on the lips of photo and statue of Baba. Different items were there on lips in different photos. Parts of the remains in the box were given to the devotees who offered that item of bhog to Baba.
7. The feeling of Presence of Baba was very strong during the recitation of Sai Amrit Vani, Pooja and Prayer. Many devotees felt Baba sitting in the white robe.
8. All the boxes of Bhog, which were kept on the table were blessed with Udi.
9. Many photos/statues and documents etc were placed before Baba and same were blessed without any delay.
10. Many devotees felt the smell of `Paan' (beatal leaf) in the mandir room when the Prasad was being distributed and devotees were passing the mandir room. Mrs Gupta asked if any body can bring the `Paan' from the market. Immediately 2 `Paans' were brought and placed before Baba. Within seconds half the `Paan' was found eaten by Baba.

Satsang Deserve it and you will have it

Deserve it and you will have it

By Dr. G.R. Vijayakumar

So long as your physical activities are not truly dedicated, the outer upasana, or devotion is only a mere show and self-deception. Dedicated upasana means that all your habits of food, drink, sleep and exercise must be absolutely in accordance with the laws of Nature. We break the laws of Nature, if we are slave to sense enjoyments and bad tastes, the punishment of which is sorrow and suffering. How can you concentrate on Upasana or devotion, when you are experiencing trouble and affliction? The man whose bent of mind is according to the Laws of Nature, whose desires are', as if those....of God Himself and whose habits are natural, is in fact enjoying oneness with God and is in practice singing Sivoham (I am Siva) . How can he have any sorrow or suffering? In Mundaka Upanishad (II.4} it has been mentioned that "a man of weak strength cannot attain Atma.." His strength menas physical, mental and spiritual. It is also called "Adhyavasaya" and, in the terminology of Gita it is called "Prajna, Pratisthita".

Spiritual disciplines are many and varied. In the case of subtle disciplines, however, much depends on the capacity of a seeker to understand guidance that comes by indirect methods rather than by explicit, verbal instructions from the guiding Master. One who can grasp Sri Radhakrishna Swamiji's quick, spontaneous reactions to his innermost thoughts and who can give the obedience demanded of him, immediately recognizes the Guru in him. Swamiji brings about a complete inner transformation in such a seeker. He patiently and ceaselessly leads those who place complete reliance on him forward from the narrow individual self to the realisation of the all-pervading Universal Self which is their true being. Sri Radhakrishna Swamiji is thus a Guru whose real mission is to help the seeker turn his mind within and find inner peace and joy through which he can attain Self-realisation.

One fine morning in 1978 or so, I went to meet Swamiji at the Sai Mandir. He was deeply engrossed in reading a letter from a devotee from Madhya Pradesh. The letter indicated that the devotee was in real distress and had sought Swamiji's blessings.

He had written to him:"......I have been reciting 'Vishnu Sahasra Namam' as advised by you. But why do I face problems after problems. Is there no end for this? ......" Swamiji gave me the letter and said: "If a devotee is interested in having the Guru remove whatever obstacles or difficulties come in his path, then he is behaving like a business man. As for as worldly advantages are concerned, they are purely transitory; wealth comes and goes, success comes and goes; it wise to use the precious wealth of Vishnu Sahasra Namam to acquire these petty advantages?"

Exactly at that time, an old lady came and prostrated to Swamiji. She was full of tears and was apologetic to Swamiji. On enquiry, she told me that about a week before, her only son was missing and she had come and told, Swamiji! “As to what is use in the recitation of Vishnu Sahasra Namam and she is full of problems.” Unperturbed, Swamiji had directed her to go back home and most unexpectedly, her son had returned home. She had now come to Swamiji to convey her gratitude for the turn of events.

As the lady left the place, Swamiji told us that one should not pray to the Lord for the removal of small, insignificant difficulties. After all, pleasure and pain are purely transitory. Pain is followed by pleasure and pleasure by pain. Pain did not exist before it came and it will not exist after a while. Similarly pleasure did not exist before it came and will not exist after a while. So why pray to the Lord for things which are only short-lived? It is as stupid as approaching the brim surgeon to help you pull a thorn from your foot when it can be removed with the help of a needle by yourself.

Satsang Most Varied and Unique Pearls for Swans

Satsang Most Varied and Unique Pearls for Swans

Gifts of Sri Sai Baba

Most Varied and Unique Pearls for Swans

By Sri Narasimha Swamiji

We find ourselves awake at night, Disturbed about another's plight. Not things that have, but things that might befall a loved one, out of sight. We want to stretch protective arms, or help by sounding out alarms, or even use some ancient charms to obviate potential harms. Our efforts seem go for naught, and worry doesn't help, we're taught. It doesn't have the strength it ought, to do the job our heart has sought. There is a way that we many turn to seek the answers we should learn, and get the strength for which we yearn, provide the cure for our concern.

"Newton's dog, his fellowmen and Newton all looked, at Nature and saw apples fall. The first looked on and derived no benefit. The second ran up and ate the fruits. Newton alone discovered the Law of Gravitation which has served mankind, as a useful theory or hypothesis to explain many facts of Nature.

All sorts of men and women have approached Sri Sai Baba. Some have returned without any benefit. Some received much of temporal goods with just a taste of the spiritual; others, higher and higher spiritual goods. Every one received what he was fit to receive. Baba, the Universal mother that he was, impartially offered his gifts, nay, scattered them before his visitors; but the crows picked up the offal and the swans, the pearls.

It was in accordance with the capacity, the receptivity and the circumstances of each visitor due to his Karma Rinanubandha, i.e., prenatal merits and ties, that Baba's gifts were effective; and hence spiritual benefits received from him are of a very varied description. Anything like an exhaustive statement of them being impossible, we may content ourselves here with a set or samples.

That Boundless Love:

When people talk of God, to most He is a word and nothing more. They know how to use it for their worldly purposes, nothing what effect it has on the hearer. Convention and current feeling invest its use with a certain dignity and telling force, especially in oaths and curses. But how few have felt at all or in any appreciable degree the sacred awe, the first basis of the idea of the Holy or that far higher feeling of all consuming all-sacrificing boundless Love! For too many have been begotten or brought up in godless families amidst cheerless, cramped and darkened surroundings where the words and conduct of the parents, relations and friends are really a stifling negation of God, conscience and the moral principle, sometimes nominally veiled by an occasional observance of forms of worship are reference to God. Some of these are at times candid enough to admit and sometimes to bemoan the fact that they could never conceive of, much less experience God in their lives.

Spiritual Rebirth, First step in God-Realisation:

The greatest service Sri Sai rendered and renders to mankind is to save such souls from their utter darkness, to show them the existence in himself and elsewhere, of vast power, vast knowledge, vast goodness and self-forgetting Love which blesses him that gives and him that receives and to make them float on waves of joy and happiness, hither to inexperienced. Rudely shaken from or terrified out of their prolonged stupor and indifference they just receive a few gleams of light into their sin soiled eyes, feel a glow of gratitude, love and other noble emotions in their chilled hearts, begin their spiritual birth and see or feel their God in Sai, their real Savior. For the first time, they get a rudimentary idea of Sri Sai and know God. He is the giver of the God-idea to them and is God, in their view and it may be their only God.

The benefit is by no means confined to this class just described. Persons, who start life better, fall into evil ways, get tainted by wicked company, sunk in voice and sin from drama and cinema songs and street talk, lose their early innocence and receptivity, become thoroughly care-hardened, sneer at purity and piety and blatantly proclaim their imperviousness to godly influence. To such, Sai has many times restored, in some degree, their lost innocence by making them feel that they see God in him and in his devotees. Some cultured and English educated persons that this writer met have confessed to him that Baba, who has restored their faiths, is God to them, that in their present life of holiness the foregrounds are fully occupied by Baba, and that Rama, Krishna, Siva, Datta and Pandarinath get their halo of glory through Baba. One lady said "Krishna no doubt appeals to me and attracts me. But Baba who often appears and instructs me in visions is a hundred times more powerful".

The need for a noble "Superman" that leads one to God is at its height in the case of advanced spiritual aspirants who style him their Samartha Sadguru and derive from him the maximum benefit that a human being can enjoy. Realisation of the Ishta devata, perpetual enjoyment of Heaven at His feet, attainment of Adwaitic Bliss or Nirvana Sukha can alike be had at the guru's feet and there alone.

A Warning:

Sri Sai Baba showered his benefits on thousands in a variety of ways. Some only of these have been revealed to this writer; and these may be a sample of his gift to others. But one cannot be sure that the highest have been yet made public. However that may be, before proceeding to give a very brief sketch of these, the writer has one request to make or a warning to give. Persons who are great admirers of particular saints, like Krishna Chaitanya, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Samartha Ramdas, Haranath or Thayumanava, should not judge others exclusively by the life, teachings and methods of their saint or hero. Let not Sri Sai Baba be measured on the Procreates bed of any particular saint. Sri Sai is a rare phenomenon by himself and his services to Humanity, if judged calmly, would be found great enough to require a special corner in our pantheon and a readjustment of our ideas based wholly on a few past examples. In the words of Browning (As adapted) we must insist,

Our times are in His hand, Who said "A whole I planned, past shows but half; Trust God, see all, nor be afraid". Add this to the rest, Take it and try its worth.

Satsang Constant Remembrance of God

Constant Remembrance of God

What is an idol (Pratima). An idol can be compared to a measure or a weight. You may call it the unit of measurement. When the measuring weight is small, the result will be great. Suppose the measuring weight is a quarter, the result of it will be four units. When the measuring weight is one- sixteenth, the result will be sixteen units. Now, we have to see what the Pratika and the Pratima (external objects and idols) in the Hindu religion are. They are units of measure to estimate the greatness of God. In Hindu religion, the great Sun and the Moon are also the forms of Pratika (external object) to form an estimation of God. Next to them are also Guru (religious teacher), Brahmana (Man of realization) , cows, Garuda (the biggest bird) Pipala, Tulasi, Kailasa (one of the high peaks of the Himalaya) the Ganga, etc. etc. Besides these, the short round black stone (salagrama) has also been taken as a form of Pratima, the measure. Was the smallest Pratika or Pratima (the unit of measure) only meant to make God look small? No. Not at all. In taking a small unit of measure it was aimed to enhance the estimation of God consciousness and Divine vision. When even the smallest stone has been accepted as Divinity, all the other things and the entire world will be nothing but Divinity. But, he who worships the idol with limited ideal that it alone is Divinity is steeped in ignorance. Such a man can well be compared to the 'worm' which is confined to the stone only.

Satsang Hazarati Durvesh Haji Mohamed Siddique Phalke

Satsang Hazarati Durvesh Haji Mohamed Siddique Phalke

The next question was “Will you give Me 40,000 Rs in 4 instalments”? To which Siddique Phalke answers, “I will gladly give 40,00000[forty lakhs] if asked. What then of thousands? Only let me be at His feet.” Siddique Phalke was affluent but was he willing to part with his money. And the deeper meaning could be given as follows .The 4 instalments could mean 1.Manas 2.Budhi 3.Aham 4.Chitta [the Ego complex] Through Antharkarnya Chatustaya. The zeros could represent the 3 bodies 1.Bhautik or physical, 2. Shukshma or subtle and 3. Kaaran or casual.[This is the first zero].

The next 0 could be Triputi that is Jnyana [Knowledge] 2 Jneya [Experience of knowledge] and Jnathru [the person who experiences it]

The 3rd zero could be the Panch –Indryias that consist of 5 Kamindryad which are touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing. And 5 Jnanaindryas that are Shabda [ears], Sparsha[skin], Rupa[eyes], Rasa[tongue] and Gandha[smell].

The 4th zero could be the 6 Arishadvargas that are Kama ,Krodha, Madha, Matsaraya, Moha, Lobha. The 5th zero could imply that he is willing to give 5 ‘Pranas’ that are “Prana’, Apana.,Udana, Vyana and Samana.

The 6th zero could mean the 5 Koshas that are Annamaya Kosha, Pranamaya Kosha, Monomaya Kosha, Vignamaya Kosha and Annandamaya Kosha. Here the Haji seems prepared to surrender in toto that is Sampoorna Sharanagathi. Baba then gets angry and throws the vessels when He hears that the Haji is ready to give 40,00,000Rs. Baba knows that the sishya is ready for total surrender. The Guru wants the sishya to be purified without having a tinge of Prarabdha so He burns it by showing anger. Then he takes 55 Rs from his pocket, and counting them one by one He places them in Phalkes hands. Money is Shri. The 5+5 symbolicaly could be the dress code of the sanyasi 1 Sirvesh or Koupin signifies total surrender 2 Pitambar signifies sacrifice 3 Danda that is Deha Dand or dicipline4 Kamandalu stands for compassion 5 Khadau. Then He bought a basket of mangos and presented it to him. And he was accepted in Baba’s durbar. Mangos represent auspiciousness.

The 3rd question that Baba asks is “What part of the sacrificial goat would he like to eat? Does he want to eat the meat covered bones or is his heart set on eating the sex organs?’’Baba wants to make sure that he has no appetite of any kind left be it for delectable food or sensual appitite. Siddique Phalke answer is incredible. He states that if Baba wishes to give him anything he would cherish a crumb from the Kolambah.

[Then He buys-----What? -] After this episode of sham rage Baba allows him to sit with Him in the Sanctum Sanctorum ,they dine together.

Satsang Hazarati Durvesh Haji Mohamed Siddique Phalke

Hazarati Durvesh Haji Mohamed Siddique Phalke

In the 11th chapter of the Sai Satcharita the incident of Baba’s wrath on Siddique Phalke is given. How Baba put forth 3 questions and the wonderful answers that Siddique Phalke gives. Durvesh Haji Mohamed Siddique Phalke was born in Kalyan around 1841. He was an affluent Jamindar [land owner] and had vast acres of farmlands. Sophisticated, intelligent, well read, and spiritual. He had travelled widely; Bhagdad, Constantinople, and Mecca were some of the places that he had visited. Dada Shaeb Khaparde has recorded one of his visits to Shirdi dated 14-12-1911- 23-12-1911 in his Shirdi Diary.

“Dada Saheb Khaparde himself was extremely learned and spiritual, states that Siddique Phalke was a gentleman of the ‘old sort’; a Karma-Margi and very intelligent. He was spiritually developed and learned; the conversations that they had were pleasant and instructive. Baba liked Phalke a great deal and is said to have granted his wish.

During that visit Phalke had a vision and he asked Dada Saheb to ask Baba it’s meaning. The vision was about 3 girls and a blind women who had come to amuse him WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?. He ordered them out or they would be kicked out and began to pray. They fled upon hearing the prayer. He then blessed everyone in the room; and in the house and the whole village. Dada Saheb was barely seated before Baba, when Baba said He was beaten last night by something on His private parts and hands. He then applied oil; wandered about, had a stool, sat near the fire and felt better.

Siddique Phalke was married to Kursheed and had two sons named Gulam Mustafa and Mohammed Mukram. He loved to wear spotlessly white clothes. Whenever the Dwarakamai was washed with cowdung Baba would summon Phalke and make him sit on the wet floor much to Phalkes’ discontent. But when he got up his clothes remained spotless as before.

Baba loved and had great respect for Phalke and whenever permission was granted for his departure Baba would walk the 100 paces with him and see him off at the breach in the wall. Phalke lived in a huge building in Kalyan called Phalke Wada and it still stands even today.

In # 11 the story of Siddique Phalkes attempt to obtain Baba’s grace is given. He stayed for 9 months in the north facing Chavadi; trying in vain to enter the Sanctum Sanctorum. Then he sought Shyamas help. Baba finally relents. And asks Shyama to ask him whether he will carefully walk the straight and narrow path that goes beyond the ‘Baravi’ well. Siddique Phalke answers that whatever difficulty he may encounter he will carefully tread that path.

In fact there is no well-called ‘Baravi’ in Shirdi or the neighbouring villages. Here Baba asks Siddique Phalke whether he is willing to tread the straight and narrow path; fraught with difficulties whether he is willing to do a 12-year penance [tapasya]? The penance of the 12 inner disciplines, which are as follows 1.Viveka [discrimination] 2. Vairagya [Renunciation] 3. Niswartha[selflessness] 4. Sama[calmness] 5. Dama [self-control] 6. Uparati-[self-withdrawal] 7. Titiksha [forbearance] 8. Samadhana [self-settled ness] 9. Shradha[faith] 10Satsang [holy-company] 11.Mauan [silence of the mind]. 12 Ekanta-Dhyana [solitude and mediation] The ‘Self’ ready for complete freedom. Lastly the Gurus grace without which nothing is possible.

Siddique Phalke indeed came to Baba of and on for 12 years.

(to be contd….)
